If you're in the market for a premium-oriented midsizer with segment-leading capability off the beaten path and some luxury goodies for good measure, you're in luck! GMC just revealed the 2024 model year Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, a no-nonsense pickup truck with 35-inch rubber boots and a 4.5-inch (114-millimeter) lift kit.
Essentially the Canyon AT4X on steroids, the AEV Edition is called this way after American Expedition Vehicles. The off-road specialist worked together with General Motors in designing this pickup, which – according to GMC – will go on sale in late 2023.
Manufactured in Missouri at the Wentzville Assembly Plant, the AEV-ified truck dons Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain 35s at every corner. There's a matching spare in the bed, where you'll find a vertical spare tire mount. Flaunting best-in-class 12.2 inches (310 millimeters) of ground clearance, GMC's off-road warrior also rocks wider tracks and fender flares.
The makeover continues with a revised fascia that includes a heavy-duty bumper from American Expedition Vehicles. The rear bumper is also stamped steel, and both ends integrate heavy-duty recovery points. Up front, you can also equip a winch to get yourself or fellow off-road buddies out of a bind.
Not one, not two, but five skid plates are featured, all made from boron steel. They're located along the rear differential, gas tank, two-speed transfer case, eight-speed transmission, steering gear, and – of course – the radiator. As opposed to the AT4X, the AEV Edition further sweetens the deal with beadlock-capable wheels, three standard auxiliary control switches, AEV embroidered headrests, and all-weather floor liners.
If you like numbers, you'll definitely like this pickup's angles: 38.2 degrees for approach, 26.9 degrees for breakover, and 26.0 degrees for departure. In case of a challenging trail section, fret not because rear bumper has easily removable corners. Like the AT4X, the AEV Edition is equipped with something called Baja drive, a drive mode that includes a launch control function.
Designed for both on- and off-road action, the launch control won't make a world of difference in a pickup this heavy. Don't expect blistering 0-60 acceleration or sports car-shaming top speed. Be that as it may, a four-cylinder turbo with 310 hp and 430 lb-ft (583 Nm) on deck is more than adequate for this application.
Joined at the hip to the 2024 model year Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, the GMC-branded sibling boasts Ultifi. That's a new vehicle software platform designed by General Motors, a platform that enables accelerated development of software and applications. Those are then sent to customers over the air, which is far more convenient than having a software update done at the dealership. Ultifi is coming to lesser versions of the Canyon and Colorado as well for 2024.
Even though no pricing information is available at press time, don't expect the AEV Edition to come cheap. The 2023 model year Canyon is available from $38,395 for the Elevation 2WD, whereas the AT4X is listed at $56,995 with late availability. In other words, you're looking at a $60,000-or-more-expensive midsizer.
