FCA US LLC has issued a recall for a handful of Wrangler vehicles produced for the 2023 model year. The off-road vehicles in question are equipped with a spare tire carrier assembly that may feature an incorrect center high mount stop lamp bracket assembly.
The Auburn Hills-based automaker started investigating said problem on April 28. The Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization within Chrysler met with the Engineering and Supplier Quality departments to review all the data available. The meeting also included Grammer Americas, the supplier of the spare tire carrier assembly for the Wrangler.

As per the document attached below, the safety boffins acknowledged a noncompliance with federal motor vehicle safety standard number 108 on July 12. The Vehicle Regulations Committee ultimately agreed to conduct a safety recall comprising 16 vehicles produced for the United States market. Production dates range between February 9, 2023 and February 14, 2023.

The recalled spare tire carrier assembly bears part number 68479193AC. Dealers will be instructed to replace the assembly with correctly manufactured units on September 29. Owners can expect to receive FCA US LLC-branded envelopes via first-class mail by September 29 as well. The remedy component bears the same part number as mentioned earlier. Chrysler didn't explain how the supplier shipped a handful of incorrectly manufactured assemblies to the Toledo assembly plant in Ohio, nor did it explain how the suspect vehicles passed quality control at Toledo.

2023 was the final model year of the pre-facelift JL. Even so, the online configurator lists the 2023 with a starting price of $31,895 for the two-door Sport. At the other end of the spectrum, the 6.4-liter HEMI V8-powered Rubicon 392 is available from $82,495.

How much did the Wrangler change for 2024? From the standpoint of exterior design, the front grille is the easiest way of telling the newcomer apart from the pre-facelift JL. When it comes to pricing, the two-door Sport and four-door Rubicon 392 now retail at $31,895 and $88,190. Under the skin, the biggest upgrade is the full-float solid rear axle of the Rubicon. Not only does it allow for tire upsizing, but it also improves the max towing capacity to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms).

Part of the reason the 2024 Wrangler is more expensive than the 2023 Wrangler is the addition of standard first- and second-row side curtain airbags. Safety additions further included standard forward collision warning from the Sport S up, as well as standard advanced cruise control with stop for the Sport S and higher trims.

The Wrangler's lineup further welcomed the Rubicon X with standard 35-inch tires (Bronco Sasquatch Package, anyone?) and the Sport S 4xe. The latter was introduced for the sole purpose of lowering the entry price point of the 4xe, which is Jeep's way of saying plug-in hybrid. 2024 also marks the first year without the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 turbo diesel, a frugal engine that's on its way out from the Gladiator pickup truck as well.
