Jeep was planning to reveal the WL this year, but the all-new Grand Cherokee has been pushed back over the health crisis that has affected the automotive industry from automakers to suppliers and dealers. According to hearsay, production may start in March for the three-row WL75 while the two-row WL74 would follow in the third quarter.
Based on the 2019 agreement between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the United Automobile Workers, two plants are gearing up for the mid-size SUV following investments of $1.5 and $3 billion, respectively. The document also confirms a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which may wear the 4xe badge. For reference, the body-on-frame Wrangler 4xe features two e-motors, a four-cylinder turbo, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We still don’t know if Jeep will utilize the Giorgio vehicle architecture from Alfa Romeo, but fret not. The Grand Cherokee will continue to offer the Pentastar V6 as the base engine, while the Trackhawk will soldier on with the Hellcat V8. In terms of exterior design, this set of spy photos reveals plenty of Grand Wagoneer styling cues up front, especially in the grille.

The headlights are significantly thinner, giving the Grand Cherokee a sleeker visual identity on the road. Spied testing in Detroit, this prototype features Goodyear rubber shoes and five-spoke wheels with a triangular motif. Out back, the lighting signature of the taillights has Grand Wagoneer vibes, though the bumper-integrated exhaust finishers aren’t shared with the full-size SUV with Ram 1500 underpinnings. Zoom in on the main picture, and you will also notice a full-size spare tire hiding under the trunk floor.

Likely a seven-seat model based on the length of the wheelbase and camouflage on the rear windows, this prototype also happens to be the closest one yet to production specifications. Although these pictures don’t offer a glimpse of the interior, a rotary shifter has already been leaked.

A choice of two instrument clusters (7.0- and 10.1-inch units), three infotainment systems (Uconnect 5 with 7.0-, 8.4-, and 10.1-inch touchscreens), and a toggle for the air suspension are highlights in their own right. By the way, you can also look forward to 4WD Low for the Terrain Select system as well as massaging heated and cooled front seats.
