The all-new Honda Civic sedan has just been spied undergoing testing on public roads in Germany. Even with the camouflage on, it's easy to make out the more refined shape that's perhaps a little longer and Accord-like.
The previous Civic was king when it came with sci-fi looks and fake features. Considering Toyota and Hyundai are also playing that design game, it's wise for Honda to tone things down a bit. We make these presumptions not only based on these spyshots, but also the recent patent leaks.
Earlier today, Honda has given us a first look at the 2022 Civic sedan through a short teaser. It will be shown as a prototype during an online presentation scheduled for Tuesday, November 17 which will take place on Twitch. A car shown on a streaming website is a pretty new idea. What next Honda, are you going to ask us for donations, or are we supposed to simp for the Type R?
Jokes aside, we can see that the Civic prototype even has German license plates. Honda's grasp of the European car market is rather loose, so much so that it's calling it quits at its two main factories in Swindon and Turkey. Even so, the sedan segment looks to have stabilized for the moment.
Looking at the patent images again, it's easy to see the low, flat headlights. The Accord influence can be seen not only in the grille but also in the quarter window behind the rear doors and a chrome strip across the top. The rear design is also really simple, with blocky taillights that resemble Volkswagen's and aren't trying to connect in the middle, like on a current model. This is very clearly a sedan for sensible people.
In terms of engines, the 2022 Civic will continue to use the 1.5 VTEC Turbo almost exclusively. It's pretty efficient, and hopefully, they've figured out a way to improve reliability too. Europe might also offer the car with a base 1.0-liter turbo, as it would have lower emissions.
