2020 Lexus LC Convertible Tackles the Goodwood Hill Climb

Previewed by a pre-production concept at the North American International Auto Show, the LC Convertible took to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to show off a bit of camouflage. Driven up the hill climb by professional racer Nick Cassidy, the prototype is our best look yet at the series-production model.
While maintaining the proportions and exterior design language of the coupe, the convertible features an electrically-operated soft top for obvious reasons. The exact date of unveiling hasn’t been announced, nor did Lexus mention if the LC Convertible will feature the same two engines as the coupe.

“Lexus is honored to join this festival, and I could not be happier to unveil this prototype model of the LC Convertible at the same venue where the LC Coupe made its debut in 2016,” said Koji Sato, international executive VP. Manufactured at the Motomachi plant in Japan, the luxurious model benefits from the know-how of the "takumi" master craftsmen who used to work on the LFA.

Chief designer Tadao Mori signed off the looks of the LC, and along with the convertible, Lexus is supposed to reveal “something big” this year. In regard to displacement, that’s an indicator the LC F is in the pipeline with a twin-turbo V8 and close to 600 horsepower. So far, the two-door model has been offered in two flavors, namely a naturally aspirated V8 and a hybridized V6.

The 2UR-GSE in the LC 500 develops 477 PS (471 horsepower) from 5.0 liters of displacement while the 8GR-FXS with hybridized assistance in the LC 500h manages to crank out 359 PS (354 horsepower). Both of them are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission, but there’s a notable difference between the Direct Shift-10A and Multi Stage Hybrid System’s gearbox.

Underpinned by the same vehicle architecture as the LS, the LC isn’t doing all that hot in terms of sales. From 2,482 units in 2017, the U.S. market accounted for 1,979 examples of the breed in 2018. The volume is even smaller for the European Union, and as expected, sales are dwindling from month to month.
