The word "forte" means something you're really good at, and it applies to Kia in this case. Sold under a variety of different names, this compact sedan is very popular around the world. Currently in its 3rd generation, the 2019 Kia Forte still has trouble competing with the segment powerhouse that is the Honda Civic.
The problem with the Civic is that it's extremely common and, some might consider, overdesigned. But the sedan is more restrained and makes a compelling case, even though it's a few years old. The press can't stop comparing it the new Forte to the Stinger, but we think it has nothing in common.
Those square elements in the headlights and the wrap-around taillights look more like the Ceed, which is the European model that underpins the Forte5 hatchback (they didn't launch a new one yet). While acceptable to look at, it's still cheap transportation, and this can also be seen in the engine department.
Honda has had a few recalls due to the 1.5-liter turbo engine, but it's undoubtedly the best thing ever to happen to a normal compact car. Kia, on the other hand, chose the best setup for a cheap car, the 2-liter GDI making 147-hp and 132 lb-ft, carried over from the previous model. The big change is that it now uses a CVT (they call it an IVT) which helps customers get up to 40 miles per gallon.
However, Honda's CVT is even better and the rest of the driving experience is polished, even a bit dynamic. Kia's real... forte is having lots of standard technology. The 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto could be the best in the economy compact class.
The Forte also has more trunk space and headspace for the driver. It has a better safety rating with more crash-avoiding gadgets.
