Presently German carmaker Porsche is in the process of renewing the 911 range. The process started at the end of last year with the launch of the eight generation of the 911, revealed at the time in Carrera S and 4S guises. This week, Porsche unwrapped the entry-level 911, the Carrera.
To be offered just as the previous generation in both coupe and cabriolet guises, the new 911 Carrera borrows a lot in terms of appearance and technologies from the already available S, but comes with a tad less power than its more upscale sibling.
Some of the most visible things setting it apart are the smaller wheels and brakes the individual tailpipe covers on the exhaust system.
At the heart of the new 911 Carrera range sits a 3.0-liter six-cylinder bi-turbo boxer engine that develops a total of 385 ps - that isor 15 ps more than the 2015 version it is here to replace. Fuel consumption has been rated at 9.0-9.2 l/100 km (26 – 25 mpg).
Controlled by means of a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, the engine pushes the car from naught to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds. An even faster time, of just four seconds, can be achieved by fitting the new Carrera with the carmaker's optional Sport Chrono Package. The top speed of the model is 293 kph (182 mph).
At the interior, the entire available 911 range, including the two cars shown on Tuesday (July 30), are pretty much the same. Similarities include the use of "the high-quality interior with a 10.9-inch touchscreen display, comprehensive connectivity and also innovative assistance systems like the Porsche Wet Mode that ensures even safer handling on wet roads."
Pricing for the entry-level Porsche 911 Carrera was not announced. For reference, the Carrera S that started the new range sells from $113,200. Porsche did not say when the new models will become available for purchase, but we expect that to be very soon.
