If we look hard enough, I bet we can find an article from 2005 saying the Golf GTI's 200 HP is too much power for a hatchback. However, we really are reaching the limits of what a front-wheel-drive family car should do with the 2018 Octavia RS 245. Will I regret saying this in 2027?
So how does the updated Octavia RS compare to that old GTI? Well, it's still got a 2.0-liter turbo engine, but the output is 245 HP and 370 Nm of torque. That's 15 HP and 20 Nm more than the previous model. Just so you know, the Octavia RS had the Golf 5 GTI engine with only 200 HP and 280 Nm right up until the end of 2012.

In essence, this is like a more family-friendly version of the Golf GTI Performance Pack. It's the same engine, available with the same new 7-speed DSG, XDS+ differential, adaptive dampers and big brakes.

VW engines are usually dark horses, and this one is no exception. With the Vbox attached, independent testers got it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.4 seconds while the official number from the manufacturer is 6.7 seconds.

Remember, this happens to be the Combi version. A couple of days ago, we saw how the new Hyundai i30 N only managed 6.6 seconds in the real world. We don't want to pick sides here, so let's hope that somebody organizes the drag race shortly.

While this is the fastest Octavia ever made, it's not the fastest Skoda. That title belongs to the 280 HP Superb with AWD. In fact, we suspect that the next Octavia RS won't be able to improve its sprit times without AWD traction, just like SEAT added to the Cupra.

We still think the new Octavia is ugly, but the RS goodies divert your attention. The standard 19-inch back wheels are nice, as is the blacked out trim on this car. However, Skoda still doesn't have a digital dashboard available on this very expensive car. It would have made the acceleration tests so much better!
