Ford has announced that the new 2014 Ford Fiesta on sale next year will be the first vehicle available in the United States with Ford’s award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost. The news is frankly not surprising at all, though we’re still waiting to see exactly what the car will look like cosmetically.
While we’re certain it will be 95% identical to the European model unveiled in Paris a few months ago, there might be slight differences in the plastic bumpers for example. Also, we’ve yet to see what the facelift for the sedan looks like.
In the US, the 1-liter EcoBoost will produce 123 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of peak torque, likely replacing the 1.6-liter base engine that only makes 120 hp and 112 lb-ft of torque. The engine has not undergone EPA economy testing, but there’s a good chance it will be a 40mpg car... at least.
“Customers are going to be pleasantly surprised at what the smallest member of the EcoBoost engine family can do,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “Most customers are not going to be thinking about the number of cylinders under the hood when they drive the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost Fiesta. They’ll notice an extremely smooth and quiet idle, terrific acceleration accompanied by a sporty sound at high revs, and – most importantly – outstanding fuel economy.”
The new engine might come with a price hike over the standard 1.6-liter. Ford says that adding EcoBoost usually costs $995. “Many customers would like the fuel efficiency of a modern diesel or a hybrid, but can’t stretch their budgets to cover the cost premium,” said Bakaj. “That’s where the EcoBoost Fiesta fits in. It will offer a highly fuel-efficient alternative at a lower cost.”
