2009 VW Routan Recalled Due to Owner Manual

No, there is no joke. 18,500 Volkswagen Routan vehicles will be recalled in the United States due to a slip-up of he who wrote the owner's manual. Somewhere in there, the manufacturer should have specified that under no circumstances should you place items on or near the airbag of the car. Common sense, wouldn't you say? Not quite. This minor hick-up is in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard no. 208: "occupant crash protection". According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in Volkswagen Routan's case the following happened: "The owner's manual was printed without the required information explaining that no objects should be placed over the or near the airbag on the instrument panel. Any such objects could cause injury to the vehicle's occupants in the event of a crash severe enough to cause the airbag to inflate." As a result, starting July 31, dealers will sent to your house an insert to clarify the matter. Should you not feel up to the task, you can take your Routan to your local VW dealer, where trained professionals will take your owner's manual and stick an insert in it. Of course, when we saw the recall order form NHTSA, we first though "What's the big deal?" Then we remembered the appetite of the American consumer for court action. Who knows, a well placed object on the airbag, at the exactly right time and... ...see you in court VW, how should I know not to place a blunt objects on the airbag? It doesn't say that, anywhere...By the way, is it safe to drive with my eyes closed? P.S. Does anyone really read owner manuals for a car?!
