Although the United States knows it as the Nissan Armada, the Patrol is an iconic off-roader all over the world. The series is turning 70 this very year and has already reached the sixth generation, although it’s currently on sale across limited regions. Back when it was available around the world, one of the most iconic incarnations was the GU facelift of the fifth iteration – precisely the model that served as the basis for this particular conversion.
Seeing the GU Nissan Patrol converted for camper duties is nothing surprising. We have watched many four-wheel-drive vehicles manufactured for great rock crawling experiences adopt the camper lifestyle before. Just about any iconic off-roader bodes well with adventurers, but for a specific couple from Australia, it was the 2006 GU Patrol that settled the bill.
The Nissan Armada/Patrol has been regarded as a very capable off-roader; it turns out the custom camper project here is the work of the owners themselves, at least when it comes to designing the travel amenities (not the build itself).
According to the review (video embedded below), the model comes with the tried and trusty 4.2-liter inline-six diesel engine capable of harnessing up to 158 hp and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque even under the roughest conditions. And this example does look capable of handling the latter, as it has been prepared for long journeys away from its home base.
Hopefully, 2021 will be a much better year than the one we just passed – but we all know the health crisis is still a long way from being resolved. Thus, such builds do give their owners the advantage of being capable of adventurous social distancing. Judging by the chapter-by-chapter presentation, the GU Patrol can easily retreat just about anywhere away from crowded areas.
By the way, if you want to know all the particularities of this build in detail, Ronny Dahl's feature on YouTube (he's part of the 4 Wheeling Australia community) has been comprehensively broken down into chapters, and all the time stamps are shared in the description.
