Widely used as a pursuit tactic, the PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver is also well-known from countless Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, the “rare and elusive self-pit maneuver,” as one reddit user jokingly sums up the incident presented in the video below, is an altogether different beast. And it apparently involves a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot and a distracted driver aboard a Nissan Sentra.
We have seen many incidents of road rage, many of them directed against Tesla cars just because they're foreword representatives of the paradigm change in our society. If you read the comments in the reddit thread of the video footage from the incident, you would assume it’s yet another classic case of Tesla-directed harassment.

It’s actually both funny and a little sad at the same time how the user community quickly redirected the discussion from easy-going jokes or genuine concern for the safety and well-being of all parties involved. And, of course, they turned everything into the never-ending conundrum of why some elements of the society can’t seem to grasp that change (including Tesla EVs) is an integral part of the great “circle of life.”

Luckily, we had enough patience to scroll further down for a possible explanation as to what really occurred. From the video itself, all we got was a Tesla minding its own business that was caught up from behind by what looks like a seventh-generation Nissan Sentra – and as the driver tried to avoid rear-ending, it apparently went into an uncontrolled PIT maneuver and crashed.

It turns out the reddit user uploaded the video of a friend’s Tesla Model 3 with permission, and the owner of the EV actually intervened with a lot of the missing details. The incident was a classic example of distracted driving (so no conspiracy was in effect), which unfortunately turned into a 6+ car pileup on the highway, according to the police.

All we have to say is that we noticed with amazement how the Tesla Model 3 (which was on Autopilot) seemed totally unfazed by the Nissan hitting in an area where it could have been completely destabilized and sent into a dangerous spin. We’re also bewildered by the young driver’s utter failure to notice a bright orange Tesla cruising in the middle of the road...
