The Trans Am was the king of the Firebird castle in 1979, reaching a record of 117,000 units produced for this model year. It was the highest the Trans Am ever got, with the production dropping substantially a year later to a little over 50,000 units.
The Formula was the least common Firebird version in 1979, accounting for 24,851 units of the entire production.

The car was available with a 301 V8 in the standard configuration, but customers could also order more powerful choices, including a four-barrel version of the same mill. The 400 and the 403 were available on the Formula, too.

Customers in California could get the Formula with a 305 instead of the 301.

Someone on eBay has recently posted one of the most intriguing Firebirds I've seen lately. Their 1979 Formula looks really good, and I won't comment too much on the cosmetic side of the car because anyone can see most tidbits in the photo gallery.

However, the best part about this Formula is the number on the odometer. The car comes with only 11,900 miles (19,100 kilometers) on the clock. It's a Canadian car, so the odometer shows kilometers, but the owner doesn't share more specifics as to how the mileage remained so low. Most cars with low miles typically spend decades in storage, so I wouldn't be surprised if this Formula was part of a collector's garage or a private museum.

The car comes with the matching numbers 301 under the hood, and while no specifics are available, I believe the original mill is still in running condition. The 301 was installed on only 7,015 Firebirds with an automatic transmission in 1979, with the same engine matted with only 1,590 manual gearboxes.

This one is an automatic, as if the 7K figure wasn't already intriguing, it's also a Canadian example, becoming even rarer. I don't have any numbers regarding the number of Firebirds exported to Canada, but it's safe to assume not too many units were destined for non-American customers.

Considering the matching-numbers engine and low miles, the car's price makes perfect sense. However, the one thing you must know is that the car remains mostly original, with one exception. It has already received a repaint, so the coat of paint it currently wears isn't the one sprayed by Pontiac in 1979. The quality of the job is good, but you'll have to see it in person to get a clearer picture.

Seller Napoli Classics is willing to let this Formula go for $32,000, but they also enabled the Make Offer button on the eBay page. It means you can send them your offer if you're interested in the car and don't want to pay that much, though I don't expect to get the price lower than $30K.
