While 1979 was a fantastic year for the Firebird lineup and the Trans Am, with over 117,000 units sold in the States, the 1980 model year witnessed a dramatic decline.
Pontiac sold approximately 51,000 Trans Ams for the year, with the Firebird, the Esprit, and the Formula recording massive drops.

While the unprecedented drop in car sales hit the entire automotive industry in the United States, Pontiac tried its best to keep the Firebird lineup compelling. A turbocharged version of the 301, available on the Formula and Trans Am, was the company's big bet, though it failed to make a big difference in yearly sales.

However, it's believed the turbo engine still helped keep the Firebird above the floating line, as otherwise, the model could have plunged even lower.

The 1980 Trans Am posted on eBay by seller BEAR BEE BRITISH no longer has the original engine but Corvette goodies. It's now powered by a 350 V8 donated by a 1972 Corvette, with the mill still starting, running, and driving. However, it's not a road-worthy Trans Am, though its mission on eBay is to find a new home where it can eventually receive an overhaul and return to public roads.

The vehicle, which comes with a NY rebuilt title, exhibits accident damage. The owner says the car "was hit light in the front," though it also wears a dent on the front fender and another on the door. The paint is also peeling, so you'll spend most of the restoration time on the bodywork.

The good part is the car doesn't come with a concerning amount of rust, and while it has already produced a bunch of holes in the floors, they're small and easy to fix.

The owner says the Trans Am is mostly original, except for the engine, so it qualifies as a solid restoration candidate. The interior looks good and complete, but it's unclear if anything big is missing.

The car doesn't require much work, or at least, that's what I can tell with a glance at the photos (which you can also browse in the photo gallery). Most of the restoration work will be aimed at the dents, the rust, and the paint, but a good mechanic should also be able to tell in a few seconds if the under-the-hood part requires attention.

Unsurprisingly, the Trans Am doesn't sell for a small fortune, as the owner expects to get $5,800. They also enabled the Make Offer option, meaning they're willing to negotiate the selling price, so contact them if you're interested in their Trans Am. 58 people are already watching the listing, so the chances are the Trans Am finds a new owner by the time the listing expires in the next three days.
