Say what you want about the Trans Am, but nobody can deny it was an iconic model. Its performance appetite made the Trans Am a highly desirable model, with Pontiac eventually creating special models built with racing competitions in mind.
The 1980 Trans Am is the perfect example.

43 years ago, Pontiac produced the so-called Trans Am Indianapolis Pace Car, a model whose role was to, well, pace the Indianapolis race. The special-edition Trans Am stood out from the crowd with special decals, a unique white paint, and a turbo engine supposed to deal with the challenge that pacing an Indy race produces.

Only 5,700 such Trans Ams rolled off the assembly lines, but the number isn't surprising. Trans Am sales were already going down, with the annual production dropping from 117,000 units to approximately 50,000 cars in 1980. It's unknown how many Trans Am Pace Cars are still around today, but one has been around for many months, and it still can't convince netizens to give it a second chance.

The first time I spotted this rare Trans Am was in July this year when the car made its way to eBay for auction. The vehicle was originally parked in a museum and came with unbelievable mileage. The odometer indicates just 3,500 miles, and they are all original. Everything about this Trans Am is original, and given it's a museum piece, you shouldn't expect anything else than a tip-top shape inside and outside.

The car has never been restored, and with such a low mileage, it's a rare opportunity to get your hands on a rare part of American automotive history.

But as it turns out, no wealthy collector is willing to spend a small fortune on this Trans Am. The car was reposted on eBay earlier this week, this time without a Buy It Now option. The auction has reached $17,800, but a reserve is also in place, and the Internet must do significantly better to unlock it.

eBay seller tufadapters did not reveal the reserve's value, but considering the car was originally listed with a $150,000 price tag, you can already anticipate where this is going. Internet bidders should probably surpass $100,000, but it's a long way from the current top offer to almost six times more.

The seller initially said they were accepting other offers, too, but it's unclear if anything has changed in the meantime. You should contact the owner to discuss such details if you convinced your significant other to spend all that money on a Trans Am. If you want to see the car in person, you can still find it in Valparaiso, Indiana, where it's sitting without moving at all. After all, every extra mile added to the odometer could mean one less dollar.
