Volkswagen started delivery of the Volkswagen Golf R 333s to the 333 customers who ordered one. Back in June, when it was revealed, it sold out in less than ten minutes.
Eight minutes or 480 seconds. That is how long Volkswagen needed to sell each and every single example of the limited-run Golf R 333, despite the hefty price. The model starts at 76,410 euros, which is the equivalent of $81,497.

That is as much money as you would pay to drive home a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody Jailbreak, for instance. Or, if we stick to the Volkswagen Group, let's say a Porsche 718 Cayman Style Edition. The sports car starts at $76,250. And you’re still left with money for a holiday.

Based on the Golf R 20 Years Edition, launched last year to mark two decades of R-badged Volkswagens, the Golf R 333 is a German affair only. The first models produced were handed over during a special event that took place at Autostadt in Wolfsburg, right outside the carmaker's factory. The owners also received a box with two sets of keys, two key chains, and a pen, all in black and lime green to match their brand-new cars.

There were over 20 identically specced Golf R 333s, all painted in Lime Yellow Metallic. They all ride on 19-inch Estoril black wheels. For more drama, the Germans fitted the ultimate hot hatch with an Akrapovic quad exhaust.

The model is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which generates 328 horsepower (333 PS, as the name implies) and 309 lb-ft (420 Nm), mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission and to an all-wheel drive system.

Those are enough to make this variant the most potent production Golf ever. It can run from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 kph) in 4.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 168 mph (270 kph). The car is equipped with Launch Control and has a vehicle dynamics management system.

The first Golf to wear the R badge was the R32, based on the fourth generation of the model. Back in 2022, the R32 came with the 3.2-liter VR6 engine that delivered 237 horsepower (241 PS) to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and a Haldex-based 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Before the R 333, Volkswagen launched two more special editions of the Golf R: the Golf R Performance Pack and the Golf R 20 Years Edition.

Considering the exclusivity, the output, and the price, we wouldn’t be surprised if this would turn into a collectors’ car and be auctioned off, in four decades from now, for over $100,000. It is also the last generation of the internal combustion engine-powered Volkswagen Golf. The ninth generation will drop in 2028, and it will be electric.
