The Golf Mk8 comes in two distinct flavors in the United States, those versions being the all-wheel-drive R and front-driven GTI. Currently priced at $44,740 and $30,530 before destination charge, both are recalled over a bit of a blunder.
On September 22 last year, Volkswagen received a report from the Wolfsburg assembly plant in Germany over a deformed strut mount. By month's end, Volkswagen received confirmation from the supplier - Boge Elastmetall Slovakia – that deformed parts had been shipped to the plant.

The Wolfsburg-based automaker then tested the R and GTI with deformed strut mounts, as well as with loosened screw connections, to assess the consequences of the supplier's blunder. Volkswagen determined that both vehicles remain steerable, and that braking isn't compromised by said issues.

Even so, Germany's largest automaker decided to call back potentially affected vehicles. A grand total of 59 were produced to US specifications and delivered to the United States, split between 7 units of the R and 52 units of the GTI. Their production dates range from August 31, 2022 to October 7, 2022 for the 2023 model year. The supplier had corrected its production process and implemented additional controls during calendar week 49 (December 5 to December 11, 2022).

Owners will be informed of this recall on or before August 18, the day when dealers nationwide will be instructed to inspect and – if necessary – replace the strut mounts. The replacement components feature the same part number as the suspect components because this isn't a design issue. Owners are recommended to run their VINs on the NTHSA's web portal to find whether their hot hatchbacks are called back or not.

Joined at the hip to the more affordable Jetta GLI, the Golf GTI comes in four distinct flavors: the entry-level S, the 40th Anniversary Edition, the SE, and range-topping Autobahn. The sweet spot in this lineup is the $33,055 anniversary spec, which comes standard with Multimode DCC and Adaptive Chassis Control. Customers are further presented with a choice between six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG, the latter transmission being pricier than the three-pedal setup.

Regardless of how you like to change gears, the Golf GTI for the United States of America belts out a respectable 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet (370 Nm) from a displacement of 2.0 liters. The EA888 evo4 is a bit punchier in R specification, which also features either a manual or a dual-clutch gearbox. The R is much obliged to develop 315 horsepower and 280 pound-feet (390 Nm) with the manual, or 315 and 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) with the optional DSG.

To put those figures into perspective, the naturally-aspirated small block in the 1996 model year Chevrolet Corvette makes 300 ponies and 335 pound-feet (454 Nm) of torque from a displacement of 5.7 liters. The more expensive R is available in two trims – base and 20th Anniversary Edition – with the latter celebrating two decades since the Mk4 R32's debut.
