Previously a trim option, the Chevrolet Nova SS morphed into its own thing in 1968. Best described as a small muscle car thanks to its diminutive proportions and small-block V8, the Super Sport we’ll talk about today is one of the best-preserved examples out there.
Offered by RM Sotheby’s with fewer than 22,000 miles (35,405 kilometers) on the clock, chassis number 114270W312450 will be auctioned on January 22nd without reserve. The 1970 model is accompanied by the original window sticker, the owner’s manual, warranty book, Protect-O-Plate, and invoice.

Considering that 13,991 cars were specified with Super Sport package for 1970, this 350/300 also happens to be a rare breed. As the name implies, 350 stands for cubic inches (5.7 liters), while 300 is the output rating for horsepower. Marketed as the Turbo-Fire V8, this engine features the correct four-bolt block and a Muncie four-speed manual transmission.

Finished in Forest Green over black vinyl, the car was completed at the Ypsilanti plan in Michigan in April 1970. Delivered new to the first owner by Frank Diver Chevrolet of Wilmington in Delaware, the Nova SS was optioned from the factory with two mirrors, seatbelts, bucket seats, a radio, a center console, and a General Motors-designed Positraction rear end.

Similar but not quite the same as a limited-slip differential, the Posi was developed for hard launches off the line, better handling in the twisties, as well as better control on wet, slick, or icy road surfaces. Power disc brakes, faux front fender lovers and hood intake vents, 14-inch wheels, a black grille, and a black rear panel are a few other highlights of the Nova SS.

Recently acquired by the seller from the original owner, the well-muscled bruiser doesn’t exhibit any underbody corrosion even though it's completely unrestored. In terms of pre-auction estimates, well, you can expect the RM Sotheby's hammer to strike sold for $30,000 or thereabouts.

So far this year, two examples of the 1970 Chevy Nova SS with the 350/300 engine and four-speed manual auctioned for $28,600. The most expensive of the lot, however, is a 396/375 that changed hands for $112k.
