One of the major appeals of tiny houses is their versatility. Regardless of their shape or size, these homes can be customized to the owners' needs and preferences so that they provide maximum comfort. But going tiny is a big decision to make, and designing the right tiny home for your lifestyle is not an easy endeavor. Luckily, for those unsure about moving into a compact home, there are ways to sample tiny living before committing to a downsized lifestyle.
Short-term rental services like Airbnb offer this opportunity, and we've seen amazing tiny houses offering guests the chance to discover what it would be like to live small. One of them is the Nest Tiny House in Phoenix, Arizona, an aesthetically pleasing, functional, and comfortable home on wheels designed by local architects Damon Wake and Hunter Floyd and built by MAK Construction.

There are several factors that have contributed to the huge popularity these types of dwellings are enjoying at the moment. For one, it's the people's desire to downsize in order to reduce their environmental footprint and create a more sustainable lifestyle. Then, it's the ability to work remotely, which encourages people to develop a more mobile lifestyle. These, combined with the rising prices in the housing market, have led to many people choosing to live in tiny homes instead of traditional brick-and-mortar ones. And since tiny houses are now commonplace in some parts of the world, it's no wonder they have become an investment opportunity.

The Nest is a gorgeous compact home measuring 24 feet (7.3 meters) long and 8.5 feet (2.6 meters) wide. Unlike other tiny house rentals we've seen, this one is impressively functional and stylish, offering all the creature comforts one would incorporate into their full-time residence. The designers squeezed inside the 200 square feet (260 square feet if we include the loft) a living room, an L-shaped kitchen, a modern bathroom, and a loft bedroom.

Defined by a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, this rental house boasts a timber-clad exterior and a distinctive roofline that oscillates between flat and angled, adding architectural interest to the build.

One of the highlights of the Nest tiny home is the extensive use of glazing. Huge sliding glass doors lead inside the living room, and the house benefits from a secondary entrance door on the side. Basically, half of the facade is a huge glass wall that offers guests panoramic views of the surroundings. You can sit back and relax on the living room sofa and literally feel like you are in the midst of nature. As you can imagine, the large glass surface also means the interior is flooded with natural light.

Inside, the Nest is brimming with amenities typically found in standard-sized houses, including a surprisingly large bathroom, a full-size refrigerator, a washer/dryer combo, a dining area, and plenty of storage options. The smart layout and minimalist decor make optimal use of the available square footage. Moreover, the floor-to-ceiling windows, 10-foot-tall ceilings, dimming lights, and clutter-free environment create a surprising sense of space.

In terms of interior design, the owners chose midcentury-inspired furnishings, custom flat-front cabinetry, light neutral colors, and minimalist decor, giving the space a chic modernist vibe.

The common area on the ground floor has the kitchen and living room in an open-plan layout that creates an inviting atmosphere and eases movement between areas. The large kitchen is well accoutered for cooking any meal, with a sink, an under-counter refrigerator, a two-burner cooktop, and a convection microwave ensuring its functionality. The quartz countertops and beautiful white backsplash give it a luxurious feel.

Multi-purpose furniture is essential in tiny homes to maximize the use of space. The Nest exemplifies this idea with a pullout drawer in the kitchen that not only serves as additional countertop space but also doubles as a dining spot.

Next to the kitchen is the surprisingly large bathroom that offers all the basic facilities and more. Besides the shower cabin, toilet, vanity, and medicine cabinet, there is tons of storage space in here thanks to large cabinets, shelves, and space for hanging clothes. The bathroom also doubles as a laundry room and integrates a washer/dryer unit.

The only bedroom inside the Nest is located in the loft above the bathroom. It can be accessed via a wooden ladder that is integrated into the kitchen cabinetry, perfectly blending in and staying out of the way.

The 60-square-foot loft fits a queen-size memory foam mattress flanked by nightstands on either side. Two windows ensure the space is bright, airy, and less claustrophobic.

A private patio, outdoor dining space, and fire pit add to the allure of this tiny house. With its elegant design and modern amenities, the Nest is the kind of compact dwelling that can persuade you to make the switch to a downsized lifestyle.
