Spontaneous camping trips and weeklong outdoor adventures away from the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoying the beauty of nature, are great for relieving everyday stresses and worries. And while everyone has their own idea of the perfect getaway, everything gets better when you camp in comfort and can enjoy all the modern amenities you are used to.
People have different expectations and goals when it comes to travel trailers, and that's why there are so many options available, but recently a tendency toward more compact solutions has been observed, with teardrop-style trailers enjoying a big rise in popularity. One such light, easy-to-tow, and easy-to-manhandle camper is the Big Buggy from Michigan-based Modern Buggy RV.

Stylish and well-made, the 2024 Big Buggy is filled with goodies and features to facilitate cooling, cooking, and sleeping in any climate. These features not only ensure a lifestyle similar to what much larger units can offer but also guarantee to keep you focused on the outdoors. The all-new teardrop camper is also small enough to tow behind a car but mighty enough to allow you to tackle more difficult terrain and explore deep into the woods.

As for the builders of this off-road capable rig, they are a new name in the RV world. The Modern Buggy RV company, or Mud Bug for short, was founded in late 2019 by Wally Holem and was acquired in February 2022 by Earl Williams, a man with around 30 years of experience in the industry. The new owner's goal is to put the company on a fast track for growth, and their two available products - the Little Buggy and the Big Buggy - do have the potential to achieve it. The manufacturer currently operates in a 30,000-square-foot facility in Edwardsburg, and the team is producing between 60 and 70 units a month.

Built to withstand any type of climate, the Big Buggy is endowed with industrial strength due to its high-quality custom aluminum frame, the Azdel ceiling and side walls, and a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof. If you are not familiar with Azdel, this is a composite material that is very resistant to water and humidity, enhancing the trailer's durability.

Touted as an adventure trailer, the newcomer is ready for overlanding trips with 15-inch all-terrain tires and torsion axles for off-road excursions. It measures 14.6 feet in length (4.5 meters) and is 6.9 feet wide (2.1 meters), but you will be surprised by how large it feels on the inside. Some clever design choices make it feel roomier and more open than other trailers this size, like the wider entrance door, the windows on the sides, the light-colored decor, and the well-thought-out floor plan.

Most teardrop trailers reserve the interior space for sleeping and have an open-to-the-elements kitchen at the back, accessible through the tailgate. Mod Bug does things a little bit differently with the Big Bugger, as both the sleeping quarters and the kitchen are in the same place. Not to mention, there is enough headroom to stand inside, and you will also find a small wet bath with a toilet and a shower head in there.

With 14 inches of ground clearance, it would have been a bit difficult to hop inside were it not for the heavy-duty grab handle and the two-step Solid RV Step added as standard.

The kitchen is on the right from the entrance door and packs in a lot of functionality thanks to modern appliances like a Dometic two-burner stove, a microwave, and a 12-volt fridge. The sink is really tiny, but then again, you must remember this is a teardrop trailer, so everything is on the small side. There is plenty of counter space thanks to a stove cover that extends the meal-prepping area, and a cool pull-out pantry and two large netted cubbies overhead provide storage space for kitchen essentials.

A nice dinette that can easily seat four people occupies the back of the camper. The two L-shaped benches have modern black and white cushions that give the interior an overall modern feel and tons of storage space underneath.

This is obviously a versatile setup, as it serves as a dinette/lounge area by day and sleeping space by night, with the table folding down to create an almost queen bed (it's just a bit narrower). The table in the middle can be completely removed if you want to have a nice, open space.

An additional cabinet with a white countertop similar to that seen in the kitchen sits next to the dinette, and a TV is mounted on the wall just above it.

On the back wall outside, instead of the typical galley, Mod Bug included a storage compartment, which comes quite in handy.

A Dometic A/C unit for temperature control, a 16-gallon fresh water tank, an 18-gallon gray water tank, and cable and satellite connections are also part of the package. For off-grid adventures, a solar package with lithium batteries is available as an optional upgrade. Mod Bug also offers a plethora of graphic packages for the camper's exterior, from simple black stripes on the sides to a black and white mountain scene.

The Big Buggy has the shape and style of a teardrop trailer but is much more than that. It offers all the comforts of home while enabling you to wake up in the middle of nature. Modern Buggy RV offers this new travel trailer for an MSRP of $28,500, which makes it an affordable option considering many of the competitors' units sell for $50,000 and up.
