Kia is returning to the Rebelle Rally for the fourth year in a row. The women's off-road navigational challenge brings together two distinct categories, namely 4x4 for vehicles with two-speed transfer cases and X-Cross for two- and all-wheel drive.
Kia's 2024 challenger is a tastefully modified Telluride X-Pro, which boasts quite a few off-road goodies from Baja Forged. Sitting 1.5 inches higher off the ground than stock, this fellow rocks a custom roof rack and bumpers that promise increased approach and departure angles. Tow points also need to be mentioned, along with a set of skid plates.

With the Rebelle Rally taking place in the Nevada and California desert over eight days and 2,500 kilometers (make that 1,553 miles), Kia has further opted for KMC wheels (18 inches for every corner) wrapped in BFGoodrich all-terrain rubber boots.

Kia is hungry for a win, for it narrowly missed first place in the aforementioned category twice. Ford sponsors no fewer than five teams in 2023, hoping its Escape-based Bronco Sport will secure a fourth win in the X-Cross category.

A very different animal from the Bronco Sport, the Telluride is a three-row family crossover with naturally-aspirated V6 muscle instead of a turbocharged inline-four lump. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost is exclusive to the Badlands trim level of the Bronco Sport, whereas lesser grades rely on a three-cylinder turbo with 1.5 liters to its name.

Standard across the board, the 3.8-liter Lambda II engine in the Telluride is a direct-injected affair that drives all four wheels by means of an eight-speed automatic supplied by Hyundai Motor Group subsidiary Hyundai Transys. The torque-converter auto is also shared with the Cadenza, K5, Carnival, Sportage, Sorento, and their Hyundai equivalents (including the Telluride-twinned Palisade).

Good for 291 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute and 262 pound-feet (355 Nm) at 5,200 revolutions per minute, said engine isn't exactly frugal. At most, you can expect 22 miles per gallon (circa 10.7 liters per 100 kilometers) on the combined test cycle for the Telluride FWD. Opting for all-wheel drive, which the X-Pro has, results in 20 miles per gallon (11.8 liters per 100 kilometers).

For model year 2024, the most affordable Kia Telluride of the bunch is the LX FWD at $35,990 excluding the $1,365 destination freight charge. X-Pro trim levels kick off with the SX X-Pro at $50,285. At the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive Telluride in production today is the SX Prestige X-Pro at $53,185 before freight and options.

Between January 2023 and August 2023, the South Korean automaker delivered a grand total of 74,834 examples of the Telluride in the US market, representing an increase of 17 percent compared to January 2022 to August 2022. The best-selling Kia of the bunch is the Sportage (96,022 deliveries thus far this year), followed by the Forte (84,398 deliveries).
