Codenamed UM, the 2016 through 2020 model year Kia Sorento was a huge commercial success. Even though it was discontinued three years ago, this generation of the mid-size crossover has been hit with a recall that affects a little over 83k vehicles.
During a review of available data from the field, Kia North America identified a rising number of rearview camera replacements for the 2019 model year Sorento. The company sourced no fewer than seven failed cameras to the Kia Corporation in South Korea for in-depth analysis. The mothership determined that an error in the manufacturing process may result in water intrusion, rendering the camera's image blank when the shift lever is placed into reverse.

Water appears to enter the rearview camera from the rear due to a manufacturing error blamed on the supplier. Hyundai Mobis, that is, which is the parts division of Hyundai Motor, Kia Corporation, and luxury marque Genesis. The peeps at Hyundai Mobis dropped the ball repeatedly as of late, with Hyundai and Kia recalling the Elantra Hybrid, Palisade, and Sportage to address the parts division's blunders.

As per documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, water may get into the rearview camera due to Hyundai Mobis creating a path via the wiring harness. Affected vehicles were produced between August 1, 2018 and June 12, 2019 for the US market. In the event of a blank image on the touchscreen caused by rearview camera water intrusion, said vehicle doesn't comply with motor vehicle safety standard 111 for rear visibility.

Dealerships nationwide will be informed of this recall no later than November 9, 2023 with instructions to inspect the rearview camera. If necessary, it will be replaced with a brand-new one featuring extra waterproofing. According to the automaker, the better design was introduced in 2019 model year Sorento production on June 13, 2019.

Owners will be notified via first-class mail on or about November 13, 2023 with instructions to bring their vehicles in for inspection. In the meantime, owners can also run the VIN on the NHTSA's website to find out whether their SUVs are recalled or not.

Redesigned on the N3 platform back in 2020 for the 2021 model year, the Sorento is getting a mid-cycle refresh for 2024. Not yet available to configure in the United States, the facelift boasts a completely different radiator grille and new interior screens.

Available with internal combustion, as a hybrid, and in plug-in hybrid flavor, the 2023 model year Kia Sorento offers three-row seating at a reasonable starting price. The most basic specification available is $30,090 plus destination charge, and for that money, Kia throws in plenty of standard goodies.

Advertised as the LX, the lowliest trim level sports a 191-hp engine connected to an eight-speed automatic, LED headlights, 17-inch alloys, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, remote keyless entry, and plenty of driver assist systems. At the other end of the spectrum, the Sorento Plug-In Hybrid comes in one well-equipped trim level (SX Prestige) at $49,990 with an EPA-rated electric driving range of 32 miles (almost 52 kilometers).
