The 45th Tokyo Motor Show is coming up in October, and Subaru won’t leave Mazda to enjoy the spotlight with an evolution of the RX-Vision rotary-powered sports car concept. One of the newities Subaru will bring forth is the S208, which is more powerful and quicker than the U.S.-spec 2018 WRX STI with the 2.5L boxer.
Following in the footsteps of the Japan-only S207, the WRX STI S208 is strictly limited to 450 examples. Modifications from the S207 launched in 2015 include a lower center of gravity with the adoption of a carbon roof, as well as a more potent engine compared to the preceding special edition. Thanks to unspecified mods, the 2.0-liter turbo boxer boasts better figures than the 2.5-liter powerplant specific to the U.S. market 2018 WRX STI.
Subaru didn’t publish the go-faster figures generated by the force-fed fury hiding under the hood, but it did mention “improved engine output and acceleration performance.” This, in turn, means more than 323 horsepower and more than 318 pound-feet (431 Nm) of torque, which sounds thoroughly exciting in conjunction with the performance-oriented AWD system.
Co-developed with the automaker’s motorsport subsidiary, the WRX STI S208 is set apart from the regular model and the Type RA by the exclusive paint finish and various fittings to both the interior and exterior. The body-hugging seats with white accents are instantly recognizable, whereas the red accenting on the dashboard, front grille, and rear bumper are there to remind the owner that he or she is driving a very special Scoobie. So special, in fact, that Subaru won’t simply sell you one. You have to rely on luck to get one.
According to the Ebisu-based automaker, the WRX STI S208 will be sold through a lottery, which means that customers need to sign up for a chance of claiming an example of the breed. Specifications, pricing information, and details of the sale by lottery will be announced on October 25.
