It took Mercury four years to understand that the Park Lane had a well-deserved place in its lineup, so after discontinuing the model in 1964, the carmaker decided to bring it back in 1964.
The second-generation Park Lane had a simple mission. Mercury wanted to expand its portfolio, so the Park Line was the icing on the cake, being placed in the lineup above the Montclair.

It was an expensive car, carrying a price tag of $3,413 for the four-door hardtop and fastback body styles. However, Mercury was offering a ton of goodies for the money, so the price-to-value ratio was fair. The engine lineup started with the 390 unit donated by Ford and developing 250 horsepower, but the second generation eventually offered even more powerful units, including the famous 428.

One of the most ridiculously cool goodies on the new Park Lane was the breezeway retractable rear window. It wasn't Mercury's idea, as a similar concept previously made its way to the Turnpike Cruiser and the Continental, but it aligned with Park Lane's new ambitions perfectly. The large displacement engines allowing drivers to enjoy the highway cruising were in perfect sync. The Breezeway option enabled a fresh breath of air coming from the back for all passengers, upgrading the driving experience at high speed.

The folks at MotoeXotica recently listed a 1964 Park Lane whose presence is intriguing. The car has had the same owner for the past 18 years and was previously purchased from the same garage in 2005. It left the dealership with a little over 25K miles on the clock and returned nearly two decades later with 32K miles.

Everything about the car is impressive, starting with the mostly original paint (only a small metal sheet has been resprayed) and the spotless interior and ending with the 390 four-barrel engine that starts and runs properly. The Breezeway retractable rear window is still there, allowing you to enjoy the big-block roar at high speed on a highway.

It's safe to assume that this Park Lane has always been properly cared for, and the garage says the next buyer will get lots of documents, including miscellaneous service receipts.

Everything works on this car, including the interior courtesy lights. It's a true collectible whose place is in a garage, though I wouldn't be surprised to see the next owner taking it out for regular drives, especially to enjoy the Breezeway magic.

The garage posted the car on eBay with a reserve, so while several people entered the bid, the top $3K offer couldn't unlock it. I don't have any information regarding the reserve, but I don't expect the car to sell cheaply, especially considering its condition.

However, you can see the car and even drive it in St. Louis, Missouri.
