Compact hatchbacks are the most popular segment in Europe. So by that account, the new Astra is the most important upcoming car for Opel, GM's stricken European division. We've been tracking its development for quite some time now and we're pleased to report the prototypes have reach the high-speed testing phase of their development.
These are the very first photos of the next Astra at the Nurburgring, taken during an official test session carried out Yesterday. Improvements will be made in a number of key areas in order to deliver a more engaging car.
Opel has recently introduced a number of new engines to its compact cars, but we think at least one new unit will be launched with the Astra K. A 1.6-liter DCTi diesel with class-leading 136 hp has just been launched and is accompanied by a cheaper, less powerful version as well. A 3-cylinder SIDI Turbo petrol is also ready, thanks to the new Corsa E. Making 115 hp, it's more powerful than the equivalent Ford Focus.
But we're pretty certain another turbo will be developed to fit somewhere between the 115 hp1-liter engine and Opel's 170 hp turbo. News from China suggests a 150 hp 1.4 SIDI Turbo is being launched on a sister model from Chevrolet, the new Cruze.
The design of the German hatchback car won't be too far from what Opel has accustomed us with. A new type of grille will be used, similar to the one on the Adam city car. The headlights will receive a more streamlined look and a raised bezel. Below them, large oval openings for fog lights are visible.
