Since Skoda is one of the few European car brands that relies heavily on domestic sales, they are an excellent barometer for the health of the European auto market. The Czech carmaker has announced today total deliveries 247,200 vehicles to customers in the first three months (January to March 2013: 220,400; up 12.1%). The last month of the quarter was especially good for them, demand for the Octavia, Rapid and other models increasing by 14.6%.
Even more substantial increases were registered by Skoda in Western-Europe, where almost 50% more Octavias were sold in March. Another top performer for Skoda was of course the Rapid, demand for the compact being up by 143% in March and 200% for the quarter.

“Recording double-digit growth in the first quarter, ŠKODA has continued impressively on the company’s path to growth,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing.

Notable 'losers' in the Skoda model range include the Fabia and Citigo. A new generation of Fabia is going to debut later this year, so it's understandable the model dating back to 2008 isn't selling well. The Citigo's decline could be down to a highly competitive city car market. But demand for downsized vehicles could be diminishing as spending power increases due to economic recovery.

“The best first quarter and the best March in our history have been the result of outstanding products and an excellent team performance. The entire model range has proven to be a great success on the international markets. The new Octavia, in particular, has been a great hit in every respect. We will be keeping the pace up in 2014, and vigorously pursuing the most comprehensive model campaign in ŠKODA’s history," Eichhorn reports.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
