Sixth-Gen 2024 Mitsubishi Triton (L200) Revealed in Thailand, Remains a Forbidden Fruit

At least for now, one thing is for sure – America's Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, and GMC Canyon have nothing to fear. As far as we know – even though prototypes of the latest generation were spotted last year in the United States, this iteration will remain a forbidden fruit.

So far, Mitsubishi has only confirmed the quick sales start at its 'home away from home' in Thailand. Afterward, the rollout will focus on several additional markets from the ASEAN and Oceania regions (like Australia) before it launches in Japan early next year. By the way, this is the first time in 12 years that the company has brought the fully redesigned Triton (also known as L200) one-ton pickup truck home with JDM specifications.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, Thailand, Mitsubishi opted out of the current automotive strategy of premiering a vehicle early and then leaving customers longing for more for months or even years. Nope, once they saw it go live, that was it – sales commence the same day as the official introduction in Thailand. Launched in 1978, some 45 years ago, the pickup truck has spanned five generations and more than 5.6 million produced units, so it has much to live up to.

The Triton now gets its complete redesign after almost a decade since the introduction of the fifth iteration – all under the "Power for Adventure" banner, which includes team Mitsubishi Ralliart using the new truck to try and secure consecutive Asia Cross Country Rally victories with the motorsport version. The civilian version, meanwhile, is full of highlights of its own.

There's a new ladder frame chassis that was developed in conjunction with the increased body size. The suspension is also unique, and the Super Select 4WD-II system comes with updated drive modes for better on-road performance. From the design standpoint, the bold new front fascia combines with "a classy interior offering excellent functionality and operability," plus significant improvements in safety and comfort.

The all-new Triton arrives with three body styles – Double cab with two rows of seats, just like in any SUV; the workhorse Single cab with seats in front only; plus the Club cab that also has just one row of seats but also some cargo space behind them and space for reclining. Last but not least, there is an all-new 2.4-liter 'clean' diesel offered with three outputs.

The base variant has 110 kW (148 hp) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft), the intermediate option rocks 135 kW (181 hp) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft), and the flagship comes with no less than 150 kW (201 hp) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft). All models can have a six-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode or a six-speed manual gearbox featuring shift-by-wire for reduced engine vibration.

Inside the cabin, the exterior's 'Beast Mode' design concept is carried over, emphasizing the "Horizontal Axis concept," adding "many geometric shapes and metallic elements to create a high-contrast, modern space." The infotainment system has a display placed up high on the dashboard, and there are USB A plus C sockets plus a wireless charger. Newly added colors include Yamabuki Orange Metallic and Blade Silver Metallic – they are present both inside and out for an added sense of fashion.
