Mitsubishi just took to the online realm to announce the unveiling of a new compact crossover this summer. The model, whose name has yet to be revealed, will be presented on August 10, greeting the world from the 30th edition of the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.
A short teaser video partially reveals the design of the upcoming model, which features a large grille up front with side vents. Decorated by the corporate logo, it is flanked by what appear to be split headlamps. However, instead of separating the main clusters from the LED DRLs using different trim, the two are located one above another, with the former sitting below the latter. It has a sculpted hood, muscular shoulders, and rear lighting signature with a pattern that mirrors the front one.
Described as a compact model by the automaker based in the Land of the Rising Sun, which is part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, it will feature a high-tech cockpit. The infotainment system was shown to a certain degree in the teaser clip shared below. It comprises a wide screen that appears to be configurable, which will be used by the person behind the wheel to access and control various functions. We can also see the digital dials and wide central air vents to some extent and the multi-function steering wheel with many physical buttons.
Don't let the rugged approach trick you because this model won't be a true off-roader with a ladder-frame chassis and low-range gearbox. However, it will be offered with four driving modes, including a Mitsubishi-first Wet mode. It will also sport a multi-meter on the infotainment screen to reveal the critical angles to the driver. Mitsubishi has yet to release other details about it, so we still don't know what will power it, though reports speak of a non-electrified internal combustion unit. We also cannot tell you whether it will feature an all-wheel drive system, but if it does, chances are it will be limited to the higher trim levels.
Now, if the upcoming compact crossover from Mitsubishi sounds and looks familiar, that's because it was previewed by the XFC Concept last year. The study has a new front design language, with an evolution of the lines traditionally adopted by this brand. It comes with T-shaped headlamps that remind us of Polestar's models. It has a sculpted profile, cameras instead of traditional side mirrors, and hidden door handles, though the latter two will likely be kept away from the production version. The cockpit sends more futuristic vibes on the concept, with sharp lines all around and a very edgy center console design.
Mitsubishi's yet-unnamed compact crossover that's due a little over a month from today will be limited to ASEAN markets. This means that it won't launch in the West, not at first anyway.
