Just last year, North America got word of a new truck camper on the block, the ultra modular Switchback X1 from Super Pacific. Well, it's back, and this time around, making precious room for a growing class of vehicle owners, Rivian R1T drivers.
Ladies and gentlemen and owners of just about any truck on the market, lend me your eyes for the next few minutes so that you may get acquainted with the Switchback X1 from Super Pacific. It's possible you remember the introductory piece we completed on this unit in 2023. If you don't, you're in for a treat.

Now, the name Super Pacific is relatively new in comparison to other established North American camper giants, having only been around since 2020. But the fact that they're still alive four years later means they're doing something right. All that brings us to their one and only available unit, the X1. Honestly, they don't really need any more than one, especially since this thing is modular and suitable for an array of trucks.

For example, you can own a mid-size truck, and for as little as $13,495, you can transform it into a weekend warrior getaway, capable of whisking you away from the quotidian without needing an entirely new vehicle, a place to store your unit or any of the other extra costs that typically come with owning an RV. If you own a full-size beast, then you're looking at dropping an extra 500 bones ($500) on the extra material and Super Pacific handiwork; $13,995 is where your experience starts.

Yet, if you're a Rivian owner, Super Pacific is now able to give you the sort of mobile habitat you've probably seen your friends with. The only catch for Rivian owners is that you will be paying a tad more for what is essentially less: the perks of owning an EV (to be read with a touch of sarcasm). I say this because the Rivian's bed dimensions come across as smaller than that of even a short-bed truck, just 54 in (4.5 ft) with the tailgate up.

How much more? Well, that's a rather interesting question, and according to Super Pacific, these design changes will start at a tad under $15K. Yet, they further add that any additional design changes they may experience during the production process will only go toward elevating the retail value even higher. Oh, and production on this bugger will only begin as soon as there are ten preorders and deposits lined up. Let's see if we can get that started by the end of the day.

As for what it is you're buying, let's take a short break out of your day to see what's in store. For that, imagine that the R1T you drive is outside and rocking an X1 on the back. Since it's Friday, your escape is planned for 5 PM. Skip going home and shower in the wild once you get there.

Now, after you've pulled up to some hidden beach, a haven on the edge of town, or even a trailer or RV park, get out of your truck and start setting up your temporary home. Since it's a truck camper, you won't have to worry about stabilizing anything, just having a level place to sleep.

Speaking of sleep, part of the X1's magic is the fully integrated tent camper hanging off the top of the base. But I bet you didn't know that Super Pacific builds this thing to be four-season-ready. Starting to understand why the higher-than-average price tag for the X1?

The remainder of what you'll find underneath that X1 shell is entirely up to you, as it'll transform your bed into the perfect storage space or mini garage. Couple that with the 11.1 cu ft. of storage space the R1T has ready at the front, and you're looking at one hell of a glamping machine.

This is also where I'd like to give my two cents on the matter. Ever since the world started talking about Rivian and its trucks, people have been exploring its camping abilities, and frankly, something like the X1 is just what's been missing. Sure, they're not the first to throw a camper on the rear of an R1T, but the X1 does look hella good on top of this EV.

The downside to the X1 is that you'll need to bring along a considerable amount of extra gear if you plan on living out in the wild for as long as your R1T's battery will last, and that'll cost you extra. Funny enough, Rivian had glamping solutions long before the X1 came along, and the Camp Kitchen was one of them.

Dear Rivian heads of operations, if you're reading this, it might be a good time to bring back that insane galley.

If you're a Rivian R1T owner and feel that what you see is right up your alley, don't be shy and leave a comment on what you like about the X1, what you don't, how much you're willing to pay for one, and if you're planning on being one of the ten preorders I mentioned.
