Part of the game of being a rapper is lots of flexing on social media and the occasional feud with a fellow rapper. In the case of Rick Ross and Drake, who happen to be feuding right now, that also entails playing into plane crash rumors.
To understand Rick Ross' "joke," some context is needed first. For weeks, he and Canadian rapper Drake have been going back and forth on social media and in diss tracks. Ross is accusing Drake of being white and having had plastic surgery on his nose, while Drake is mostly fighting back on these claims.
The other day, a rumor started making the rounds on social media about how Rick Ross' private jet had been involved in some kind of accident. That would be the custom "$5 billion play" black Gulfstream G 550 jet Ross bought in 2023 and can't stop showing off on the socials ever since.
As these things go, the initial rumor was picked up and amplified, though lacking a single credible source. In a matter of hours, Ross' private jet had "crashed," which prompted speculation on his and his crew's condition.
Not the kind to ever miss an opportunity to get more attention, Ross jumped on his Instagram stories to post a video to "thank you everybody for the prayers" and to claim that "it happened." "I can't say what, but it happened," he added, before saying "come on, white boy."
Rick Ross claimed that his plane was attacked by fighter jets in Top Gun style, adding that he saw one of the pilots' nose just before his aircraft went down – a clear reference to his previous plastic surgery allegation about Drake. He added that his Gulfstream had, indeed, crashed but added that everybody was fine.
Obviously, none of that happened. Based on Ross' tweet, all this drama is promotion for his upcoming release, which will be heavy on Drake disses. It's also another way of keeping the feud alive, which, in turn, helps with sales.
Feuding aside, Drake is also part of the mile-high celebrity club and often boasts about it on social media, though there's been some talk about how he doesn't really own the plane he claims he owns. If he does, it makes him a bigger baller than Ross because it's a Boeing 727 wearing a custom wrap by none other than the late Virgil Abloh, called Drake Air.
Meanwhile, Ross is believed to have really bought the 2012 Gulfstream he flies with regularly and got it painted in black, with his name in large gold letters – because only posers get wraps, as he once put it.
At the end of the day, even with their millions and their super fancy (and enviable) toys, some rappers choose to act like kids at the playground. And that's the best description of the recent plane crash reports and Rick Ross' joke.
