Xiaomi is the first big tech giant to launch a full car, with the first units expected to hit the streets next year. The smartphone maker has already confirmed the project but remained tight-lipped on the specifications.
A new leak that surfaced this week reveals that Xiaomi plans to launch two versions of the Xiaomi Car, including an extended-range configuration.

We've known for a while that Apple's tech rival wanted to release a fully electric vehicle, and the new report claims Xiaomi's car strategy has since evolved past this ambition to include a powertrain specifically focused on offering extended ranges.

An extended-range powertrain includes a conventional gasoline-powered engine that plays the role of a generator for the electric motor. It helps charge the battery and help increase the battery. According to the latest reports, Xiaomi wants to use a 1.5-liter engine on its extended-range vehicle.

The company has discussed battery supply deals with several parties, and the entry-level Xiaomi Car will use batteries produced by BYD Blade Battery. They will offer 40V voltage. The upgraded version will be fitted with 800V batteries from CATL Qilin Battery.

The information is still unconfirmed, so take everything with a pinch of salt for now.

Xiaomi Car should see the daylight next year, with the Chinese tech giant planning to gradually accelerate production. Xiaomi wants to produce 100,000 units next year before doubling the output in 2025.

The company wants the Xiaomi Car to be specifically focused on technology, and recent documents indicated that the company will also be equipped with CarPlay support. The adoption of CarPlay is not surprising, especially as Xiaomi doesn't want its vehicle to be aimed specifically at Xiaomi phone owners. With CarPlay, drivers will be allowed to connect an iPhone to the Xiaomi Car and project apps, such as Google Maps, Waze, and Spotify, on the larger screen inside the cabin.

Xiaomi is also expected to develop its phone projection system that will offer additional capabilities when the vehicle is paired with a Xiaomi smartphone.

Meanwhile, Apple has a hard time making progress with its electric vehicle. People familiar with the matter said the project has lost traction, with the iPhone maker now likely to take the wraps off the vehicle in 2026. Apple initially wanted to launch the Apple Car in 2025, but the unveiling date could be pushed back even more if the development doesn't make the desired progress.

The Apple Car is expected to land as a fully electric vehicle, with no extended-range configuration planned. It'll also focus heavily on smartphone integration, running the new-generation CarPlay that Apple will bring to the first vehicles later this year. Apple has so far remained tight-lipped about its automotive strategy, but an announcement is still expected by 2025.
