The name of Xiaomi's first car has allegedly leaked, with the tech giant expected to unveil its vehicle in October or November.
Xiaomi could become the first tech giant to launch an electric vehicle built from scratch, with rival Apple to follow in its footsteps in 2025 or 2026. Huawei is also involved in the car manufacturing business, but the company works with traditional carmakers and supplies the software to power smart capabilities.

Xiaomi's first car could be called Modena, though previous reports indicated that the phone manufacturer refers to the project as MS11.

Modena is an Italian city with a long history in the automotive industry, as it served as the home location for several assembly plants, including for Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari, and Pagani. It's unclear why Xiaomi uses Modena as the car's name and whether the company has worked with any of these Italian carmakers to develop its vehicle.

Chinese media reports that Xiaomi is working around the clock on getting the vehicle ready for mass production, with a new factory in Beijing expected to produce 100,000 units next year. The trial production has already started, but the output is limited to approximately 50 prototypes per week. Xiaomi is still waiting for the go-ahead from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology before it can begin mass production.

The car's launch data is as mysterious as it gets, as people who claim they're familiar with Xiaomi's plans previously offered contradictory information. Some sources indicated that Xiaomi wants to unveil the vehicle alongside the new Xiaomi 14 smartphone, presumable as the mobile device comes with deep integration into the car. An October event could witness these two highly anticipated debuts, though other sources believe Xiaomi could wait until November for the launch.

However, the MIIT regulatory approval is only expected in approximately two months, so Xiaomi will likely wait until November to take the wraps off Modena.

Xiaomi is currently on a hiring spree for its Beijing assembly plant. The tech giant is particularly interested in workers with experience in the automotive industry, but the local media is reporting that Xiaomi even rejected several Mercedes and Tesla workers. The company only wants the best of the best, as it considers Modena a high-priority product whose quality must be top-notch. Xiaomi will position its car as a competitor to Tesla and a potential Apple Car.

Xiaomi car will hit the streets as a sedan with two battery versions. The 101 kWh configuration will support a maximum range of 800 km (about 500 miles), but the car could also sport a performance-oriented version whose range would drop by 100 to 200 km.

The cheapest version could cost around 200,000 yuan (about $27,500), with Xiaomi also planning an international launch, including in the largest American and European markets.
