Everybody knows Apple is already working on an electric vehicle, but the project is progressing slowly. The most recent reports on this front suggest the iPhone maker needs more time to make it happen, so the Apple Car could launch later than anticipated.
Meanwhile, Apple's rivals move faster. After Huawei, which stepped into the automotive world using partnerships with traditional carmakers in its home market, Xiaomi is getting ready for the big expansion in the car work with a vehicle built from scratch with no extra help.

The Xiaomi Car, which the Chinese smartphone maker has developed without using a collaboration with an automotive manufacturer, is expected to launch in 2024, with an official announcement due later this year.

More information about the vehicle keeps making the headlines as we approach the rumored unveiling date, and now Bluetooth certification reveals some juicy details.

The Xiaomi Car made its way to the Bluetooth Technology Alliance for wireless certification, and the official documents reveal the vehicle will use Bluetooth 5.2 and USB media playback. The two specifications aren't surprising, considering they've become common in the automotive world, but the more unexpected part is the integrated CarPlay support.

On the one hand, CarPlay support makes perfect sense, as the smartphone mirroring option is a must-have system for most new-car buyers. Apple's data reveals that nearly eight in ten buyers in the United States wouldn't order a vehicle without CarPlay. The CarPlay adoption is on the rise, and the negative feedback generated by GM's decision to drop the system is living proof.

On the other hand, Xiaomi offering CarPlay is a bit unexpected, given the competition between the smartphone maker and Apple. Xiaomi and Apple are currently two of the biggest phone makers in the world, and the battle will soon move to the automotive world once the two launch their vehicles.

The Xiaomi Car is expected to feature advanced connectivity options, allowing drivers to pair smartphones with the vehicle for a seamless transition between screens. Apple is likely aiming for similar capabilities in the Apple Car, betting big on the iPhone adoption levels worldwide.

Xiaomi could develop a CarPlay alternative, though its global market share could limit the vehicle's audience should it drop support for Apple's system. As a result, Xiaomi made the right call, eventually offering CarPlay in the upcoming model. I wouldn't be surprised to see Xiaomi also integrating a CarPlay rival into its vehicle, possibly offering more advanced capabilities compared to Apple's solution.

Xiaomi Car will go on sale next year, with pricing expected to start at approximately $35,000. An upgraded model specifically focused on performance could cost $10K more. The vehicle will initially launch in China, but Xiaomi Car should eventually go on sale worldwide, as Xiaomi plans to compete with traditional carmakers in international markets.
