The Mazda MX-5 is one of the best balanced and most fun to drive rear-wheel driven cars you could buy on a budget. However, if you want to take your MX-5 racing, and do it professionally, you will need to spend a lot more money than you would for the standard car.
Mazda is now offering the MX-5 GT4, which is a fully-fledged FIA-complian racing car which, for some £150,000 comes ready to race - all the driver has to do is race it and cover the competition costs. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter motor which pumps out a respectable 320 hp, and thanks to its very low 1,000 kg weight, it should be a screamer!
The MX-5 GT4 will compete against cars of similar spec, prepared by Aston Martin, Lotus and even Ginetta, in the Avon Tyres British GT series. According to Sam Hignett, Managing Director at Jota Sport (the company which turns the MX-5 into the GT4), "we are still developing the car, but we are now at a point that we can offer this car to customers safe in the knowledge that it is going to be a front runner in any GT4 field. Any team buying the MX-5 GT4 will have a potential winner ready to race.”
