FIA has just announced that Madrid will join the Formula 1 season in 2026. But this Ferrari driver thought the race had already started. He pressed the throttle more than he should have and in a tree in the heart of the Spanish capital. Minutes later, the driver tested positive for alcohol.
The Spanish Grand Prix will include both track and street sectors. It will stretch along 5.74 kilometers, will feature 20 corners and a projected qualifying lap of 1 minute and 32 seconds. But La Castellana, the street connecting the south to the north of Madrid, is not included.

However, a Ferrari driver must have thought otherwise. At 3:00 AM, he was in the mood for some street racing. He pressed the acceleration pedal much too hard, while driving along La Castellana, not far from Real Madrid's stadium, Santiago Bernabeu. His supercar started fishtailing and came to a halt after slamming into a tree on the side of the street. The crash left the car in pieces.

The aftermath of the crash involving the Ferrari was caught on camera by another driver, who uploaded it to Instagram. The video shows a yellow Ferrari 488 GTB completely destroyed. The front end is a mess. There is just the hood looking as if it's floating in the air, as the frunk must have disintegrated. Parts of the car flew around, and the tree fell victim to the impact. All airbags on board were deployed.

The driver walked away unharmed. However, the test with the breathalyzer was positive, so he is facing criminal charges. Meanwhile, his passenger required minor care from the paramedics.

Now, the car is on its way to the scrapyard, and the driver is probably on his way to jail. According to the local media, the Penal Code indicates sentences between three and six months of prison, six to twelve months of work for the community, and the loss of the driver's license for a period of one to four years. Furthermore, driving under the influence brings sanctions that exceed 1,000 euros ($1,086).

The Ferrari 488 GTB that found its end in the tree in the heart of Madrid is an almost $300,000 supercar. The money brings the rear mid-engine model powered by the Prancing Horse’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, generating 661 horsepower (670 metric horsepower) and 561 pound-feet (760 Newton meters) of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission steers these toward the rear axle.

The 488 GTB flashes from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 3.0 seconds, takes 8.3 seconds to reach 124 mph (200 kph), and runs the quarter mile in 10.45 seconds on its way to a top speed of 205 mph (300 kph). None of these is going to matter when the car ends up in the crusher. Unless someone decides to fix it and sell it, writing that it went through a minor crash in the listing.
