Lexus is not the first carmaker to venture into the realm of ship design. Powered by Toyota's appetitefor ship building, it is however on the verge of becoming one of the few that actually sell boats.
On Friday last week, Lexus pulled the wraps off a 65-foot yacht it calls the LY 650, a machine the carmaker places in the same category as the LS sedan, LX SUV and LC coupe. It said that this is the fourth Lexus-branded flagship, joining the three car models in the stable of what it hopes to be creations with prestigious pedigree.
Lexus made this analogy because the yacht it debuted is a maritime application of the design and build processes it uses for its cars. “This maritime application is another proof point in the storied history of Lexus that explores new frontiers both inside and outside the automotive industry,” said the company.
The LY is based on the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept presented last year, one of the main differences being this one will get sold to customers.
There is no official information available on what powers the new yacht, but it’s very likely it uses the same derivatives of the 2UR-GSE V8 deployed by the Lexus RC F coupe, which were also used in the concept.
That means a twin 5.0-liter gasoline V8, which develops 440 horsepower and can power it along on the waves at speeds of up to 49 miles per hour (43 knots).
The LY 650 measures 65 feet in overall length with a 19-foot beam and presents a pronounced bow, curved deck accents and accentuated aft hips.
The boat will be sold and serviced by Marquis-Larson Boat Group, a Wisconsin-based company that had a hand in the creation of last year’s concept as well.
Lexus says it expects the first model of the yacht for customers will be ready in the second half of 2019 when it will also be making its global debut.
