Kids have had a lot of spare time this year and everyone has been chipping in to help parents cover for the hours that were usually relegated to mundane activities – school, playing with friends, doing homework, swimming, etc. And we mean everyone – including automakers. Based on that idea Lexus seems to have expanded its creative thinking into giving something to do to adults as well.
Conveniently wrapped in a “social-media driven program” comes a new initiative called Lexus Creates. Of course, everything needs to also touch upon a series of marketing values – such as brand ethos, tales of “Lexus brand hallmarks of design and craftsmanship” and whatnot.
We could just take this face value – the automaker has found another way of communicating with its clients. And we really do not mind that it involves an activity its diehard rival Infiniti has also thought about. Thus, the first installment in the new Lexus Creates series involves the legendary craft of origami.
And it sees the brand join forces with U.K.-based origami artist Coco Sato. It is rather telling that Lexus chose a partner from the British Isles because we at once remembered the luxury carmaker once created a life-sized car out of nothing but paper – and they did it with help from London-based LaserCut Works.
Lexus Creates has produced the first workshops as well – and Coco Sato is aiming to test our skills with the origami art by means of creating a cat, a leaf and then even a butterfly. With Sato already an accomplished artist that showcases the traditional Japanese origami with original modern touches it is clear she knows what she is doing.
We are not entirely sure of our skills, though – last time yours truly tackled an origami figure I was left scratching my head next to the kids with the most trifle issue... what is the correct dimension for an origami paper. You, on the other hand, should not feel discouraged – even if in the end the creation is not the same as Sato’s, it is the journey towards achieving a goal that also matters a lot.
