Kia is constantly expanding its portfolio of electric vehicles, and after the introduction of the EV9 earlier this year, they are now working on a smaller model. It will be christened the EV4 and will sit at the low end of the brand's high-riding zero-emission lineup.
Spiked looking like a mix between the EV5, EV6, and EV9, the first-ever EV4 will have subcompact proportions. It will probably be positioned at the upper end of the subcompact segment, where it will take on the likes of the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka-e, Peugeot e-2008, and other similarly-sized battery-electric rides.
The rumored use of the eGMP architecture means the EV4 will share many nuts and bolts with the larger EV6 and EV9. The same construction also underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and the Genesis GV60. It appears that the Korean automaker does not intend to offer it with the 800-volt tech, as it will probably get the 400-volt setup to keep the pricing in check.
Expected to cost less than $30,000 when it launches, when it comes to the entry-level grade, the Kia EV4 will likely make use of a single motor and will have to make do with two-wheel drive. Details surrounding the powertrain are yet unknown, though it is obvious that it won't break any speed records. The targeted range is also a secret for now, though it should be more than decent.
Visually, Kia's upcoming EV4 features a pair of vertically stacked headlamps. The greenhouse is kind of similar to the EV5 and EV6, and out back, it has taillights that remind us of the EV6. The pictured prototype has a good amount of plastic cladding on it that is visible, especially at the back. However, from what we can tell, it has the final production body. The triangular-shaped wheels will likely make their way to the production variant.
We expect the car manufacturer to gradually start removing the camouflage from the EV4 in the next weeks and months and to eventually give it trippy vinyl stickers instead, which will reveal more of the design before the grand unveiling. It is currently unknown when Kia will officially lift the curtain for the subcompact electric crossover, but our spy photographers believe it will make its way to the market as a 2025 model. This means it might be introduced sometime in 2024.
