Tracing its origins back to a manufacturer established in 1954, the company known today as the KG Mobility Corporation was named SsangYong Motor Company for a while, between 1988 and 2023.
There's a very convoluted origin story for this company – two separate entities merged and formed Ha Dong-hwan Motor Co. Then, in 1977, the firm changed its name to Dong-A Motor. It was overtaken by the SsangYong Group in 1986 and changed its moniker accordingly, but that doesn't mean it escaped financial trouble.

Over the years, it was controlled by Daewoo Motors (now GM Korea) and China's SAIC, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra. However, in 2020, it was running aground yet again after registering a popular hit with the Tivoli subcompact crossover SUV. The latest change of ownership came in 2022 after a failed attempt by Edison Motors the prior year. Now, the KG Group (best known for KG Chemicals and KG Steel) is the majority stakeholder through a special consortium.

To deliver itself from the "painful image" of the past, SsangYong became KG Mobility in March 2023, and overseas markets will get to experience it as KGM. Hence, this is why KGM Motors UK launched the all-new Torres in Great Britain after the model was previously announced under the former SsangYong branding when it was also introduced as the Torres EVX rugged electric SUV at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show.

Already up for ordering, the all-new Torres starts the company on its new journey of 'Powered by Toughness' design philosophy while also keeping in touch with the previous characteristics of "distinctive and authentic SUV" flair. With a name inspired by the "breathtaking landscapes" of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, the mid-size crossover SUV shares the platform with the fourth-generation SsangYong Korando and will arrive in UK showrooms soon as an ICE-powered model.

If you wait a little longer, then the Torres EVX is available starting in April. Back to the regular Torres, KGM Motors offers 2WD K30 and K40 grades. These will be followed by the K40 with AWD starting in summer, but all three of them feature the same powertrain – a 1.5-liter G-Di turbocharged engine with a 3rd generation Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. It is the same one supplied with the Korando but has 10% more power at 163 ps/161 hp and a maximum torque rating of 280 Nm (207 lb-ft).

Inside, Torres offers a modern layout with two 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment touchscreen, plus standard features like Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, and front USB & and AUX ports. The loading space is one of its bragging points, with a luggage capacity of 703 to 1,662 liters (24.82 to 58.69 cu.ft.) and a towing capacity of 750 kg (1,653 pounds) for an unbraked trailer.
