Johan de Nysschen, president of the Infiniti brand decided to send a letter to the fans and automotive media explaining why they’ve changed the naming scheme. The automaker is preparing a massive lineup of brand new models, of which we know very little about. The problem for them is that just about every letter-number combo is already owned (Mercedes?).
And so, they dug up something from the company’s history and decided to name all cars with Q and all crossovers with a QX. It looks like the engine’s displacement will not be part of the car’s name any more, nor will the availability of all-wheel drive.
At the bottom end of the range, Infiniti will introduce a compact model to built in England, which could be based on Mercedes’ A-Class.
But that’s not the coolest part. In his letter, Nysschen nochalantly suggested that his company is preparing a version of the M sedan with a turbo V6 that will produce over 550 horsepower.
“I'm sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8 powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic,” the Infiniti boss said.
M30? So does that mean it’s got a 3-liter V6. More likely it’s the same 3.8-liter as the Nissan GT-R and he’s trying to confuse us.
