Infiniti Could Build a GT-R, But Probably Wont, Ghosn Says

We’re not really fans of Infiniti’s products at the moment. Oh sure, they look a bit different to the Nissans they are based on, but we’d much rather race a 370Z than a G37 at the lights. However, the idea of an Infiniti-badged GT-R has a bit of appeal, though it doesn’t make all that much sense.

There’s nothing essentially wrong with the eclectic lines, creases and scoops on the GT-R, though a coupe-ish body like an Aston Martin would be nice. This is a rumor that seems to have been around for a while now, so Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn decided to shed some light on the subject.

According to CAR Magazine, the head of Nissan says his company “could” build an Infiniti GT-R, but there’s no real need to do so. “Are we going to do that, I would say no, I don’t think so,” said Ghosn. “If your question is "could we do that", I would say yes”. This could prove to be the info that puts all rumors to rest, but given the popularity of the GT-R is reaching cult status, it’s very tempting for the Japanese carmaker to dream up a new performance car for its luxury division.

If you’ve got your mind set on such a car, there might still be hope, as Ghosn does admit the project is technically feasible, so at least we can dream of a svelte incarnation of the 2009 Essence concept with all-wheel drive and a mighty twin-turbocharged V6, rolling around on tires filled with nitrogen.

Right now, the brand has a lot off products to bring to market, so the CEO’s diplomatic answer indicated the Infiniti GT-R is not a priority right now.
