We all know how difficult it is to make a good car commercial, especially when you can't sell excitement. You'd think that a car that gets up to 55 mph was going to be too boring for ads, but Honda's commercial for the new Insight claims it's anything but that.
Honda's whole campaign for this car is called "Fight Mediocrity," and this is their flagship commercial. It shows a world of vehicles shaped like blotches of clay which read Meh, Ugh and Blah.
Honda is trying to make it clear that drivers don't need to sacrifice the desire for styling, performance, passenger space and cargo room to achieve excellent gas mileage. Of course, other claims are also being made, such as higher cargo capacity than the Corolla and Cruze.
"Our new marketing campaign introduces the all-new Honda Insight as simply a great sedan to demonstrate that a hybrid vehicle can be a beautiful thing," said Susie Rossick, Assistant Vice President of Honda Marketing at American Honda Motor Co."We have created a campaign to show that with the Honda Insight, you can have a fuel-efficient vehicle without compromising great styling and fun-to-drive performance."
Are they blowing smoke up their exhaust pipes? Not all the way. Dedicated hybrids have come a long way, but most of them still look pretty weird. Just look at the Prius and Hyundai Ioniq. But the 2019 Insight could easily be mistaken for an Accord.
We think it looks better than the Accord because of the low-slung body it borrows from the Civic, with which it even shares the roof and rear quarter panels. It's way quieter and has a better interior than the Civic too... if you buy the Touring trim.
Under the hood, you will find Honda's 151 horsepower system consisting of 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine, a lithium-ion battery, and two-motor hybrid drive.
