While General Motors is trying to get rid of Android Auto and CarPlay in its cars, other carmakers are fully committed to improving the experience offered to drivers.
Honda not only plans to stick with Android Auto and CarPlay in the long term but is also working around the clock on bringing new functionality to the infotainment screen.

The latest announcement brings the myQ Connected Garage in-vehicle service to Android Auto and CarPlay, allowing drivers to open and close garage doors without picking up their mobile devices.

The myQ Connected Garage platform should work with the majority of garage door openers on the market, so if you own a LiftMaster or Chamberlain model, you should get the full functionality. Depending on the garage door you installed at home, you should be able to set up a Wi-Fi-enabled opener for your Honda right away. However, if you own a non-smart model, you might need a myQ Smart Garage Control device that you can get with a 30-day demo subscription.

If you wonder how the service works in your Honda or Acura, the integration was designed to be as convenient and straightforward as possible. As a result, when you're close to our garage door, you can open and close it from the infotainment screen on Android Auto and CarPlay. As a bonus, the system will also offer geofence, meaning that drivers will receive a notification on the screen to open or close the garage door when they approach or drive away from the location of the garage.

One of the most important tidbits is who gets the feature and who doesn't. Honda says the new system to control garage door openers from Android Auto and CarPlay will launch in 2023 and 2024 Honda and Acura models. However, the integration will also be supported in "millions of older Honda and Acura models supporting CarPlay and Android Auto." Honda did not share additional specifics, so it's unclear when the myQ Connected Garage integration will make its way to these older vehicles.

Garage door openers are also making their way to Android Auto and CarPlay outside of Honda vehicles. On Android Auto, the feature is powered by the IoT software category, which Google unlocked not long ago. Garage door openers work on Android Auto, similar to the Honda experience, with users allowed to open and close the garage door right from the infotainment screen.

Honda says the new technology is "added through app software and no new vehicle hardware required." Customers who want to try the integration of myQ Connected Garage in their Honda or Acura vehicles can do so by subscribing to a free 30-day demo offered via HondaLink and AcuraLink. Afterward, customers will have to purchase a subscription to continue using the service.
