If the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards the Top Safety Pick+ accolade to a vehicle, said automobile is as safe as technically possible. Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, earned no fewer than three such awards in one fell swoop for three sport utility vehicles.
There is, however, wiggle room for error with the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ accolade. The GV60, which is the brand's first-ever electric vehicle based on the Hyundai E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, scored acceptable for the ease of use of the child seat anchors (LATCH).
The GV70, which is available with both internal combustion and electric propulsion, was rated advanced instead of superior for both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. As for the larger and posher GV80, the rear-biased SUV earned acceptable for the headlights and child seat anchors.
Although there is room for improvement, remember that all three of these vehicles aced their crashworthiness evaluations. The tests in question comprise the driver- and passenger-side small overlap front crash test, moderate overlap front crash test, and side crash test.
Genesis embodies the best that Hyundai has to offer. As such, it was only natural for the GV crossovers mentioned above to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. All three vehicles feature at least eight standard airbags, plus Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. In addition to vehicles, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is programmed to detect cyclists and pedestrians as well.
Twinned with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, the GV60 is available in limited numbers at select retailers in 23 states. The 2024 model carries a sticker price of $60,550 (excluding destination charge) for the Advanced AWD version. The Performance AWD costs $69,550.
Although it can generate 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) of torque for up to 10 seconds at a time in boost mode, the Performance AWD leaves much to be desired in terms of range. 235 miles (378 kilometers) on the combined test cycle, that is, and the Advanced AWD fares poorly as well due to 248 miles (399 kilometers).
HMMA, which stands for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, is where Hyundai produces the US-spec GV70 and Electrified GV70 for the 2024 model year. Available with 2.5-liter turbo, 3.5-liter turbo, or all-electric muscle, pricing for this SUV starts at $44,900.
The GV70 shares the Hyundai-Kia M3 platform with the GV80, the brand's largest utility vehicle yet. Professional golfer Tiger Woods crashed a GV80 in February 2021 on Hawthorne Boulevard in Los Angeles. Even though the vehicle rolled multiple times, Tiger survived the horrific crash with a fractured leg and a shattered ankle.
Had it not been a vehicle as safe as the GV80, the pro golfer may have gotten the short end of the stick.
