The most popular vans that people transform into tiny homes on wheels are the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the Ram ProMaster, and the Ford Transit. Ford recognized an opportunity to cater their vehicles toward van-lifers, so last year, it launched the Ford Transit Trail, an adventure-ready version of the Transit. It serves as an excellent platform to build on, as proved by this excellent build by Gone Mobile Vans based on a 2024 model.
Before we take a look at the rig, let me tell you more about how the Ford Transit Trail differs from its siblings. First off, it comes with a 2.25-inch body lift compared to the standard Transit. Second, it has a 3.5-inch overall ride height increase.

The Trail version also comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 30.5-inch Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse all-terrain tires, splash guards, a skid plate-style front bumper, and side running boards. Another notable feature is a custom grille that integrates amber market lights.

Power is provided by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine outputting 310 hp and 400 lb-ft. (542 Nm) of torque, paired with a 10-speed transmission.

Gone Mobile Vans, a Costa Mesa, California-based company, took this amazing platform and made it even more adventure-ready inside out. At the rear, you'll discover a spare tire carrier, while the interior bedroom space was increased by fitting side flares complete with slide-screen windows.

You can climb on the roof using a ladder mounted on the vehicle's driver's side. Up there, you'll find a Flatline Van Co. Safari roof rack holding a Fiamma F45S manual awning, solar panels, and three scene lights. A StarLink mount will also be installed.

That's it for the exterior, so let's step inside and start the tour in the driver's cabin. You'll notice it isn't separated from the living space, but there's a curtain you can use for privacy and to block light. Furthermore, this Transit Trail boasts several options, including an HD touchscreen, Adaptive Cruise Control, and other safety features, as well as factory swivel seats. Above, you'll discover a headliner shelf from Van Wife Components, providing plenty of storage space.

This van is insulated with sound-deadening material and a 3M Thinsulate for the walls. In the floor, Gone Mobile Vans added three-quarter-inch composite foam and fiberglass, covered by 2tec2 vinyl flooring.

Regarding design, this mobile home's exterior grey theme continues inside, with the interior finished all around in grey paired with some bamboo doors for the overhead cabinets. My favorite aesthetic detail inside this build is the pearl-colored ceiling with a topographic map design.

Behind the driver's seat, you'll find this rig's seating area. It comprises a sizeable two-part bench and a swivel table. Open the top panel of the part of the bench closest to the driver's seat to reveal a Wrappon toilet.

Opposite the seating area, you'll notice a 36-inch Lost Hiway galley covering part of the entrance. It features a flip-down table perfect for cooking outside, an Isotherm slide-out fridge/freezer, and a deep stainless-steel sink. It also integrates two USB ports, 110 V and 12 V outlets, and switches for a water pump and a greywater tank dump valve.

For storage, you can use an overhead cabinet above the galley, as well as three additional ones on the opposite side of the van.

The rear part of the interior is occupied by the bedroom/garage. There are two fender boxes that are connected by panels to form the bed. Due to the flares, the bedroom has a width of 80 inches (203 centimeters). Moreover, the driver's side fender box provides a ton of storage space inside.

Gone Mobile Vans added a tri-fold mattress with five-inch memory foam. So, whenever you want more walking space or extra room to store bulkier items, such as bikes, you can remove the bed panels and fold the mattress out of the way.

In the lower part of the fender box on the driver's side, the builders fitted the power system. It features two EcoFlow 5kW batteries, a power hub, and a smart distribution panel. The passenger side box houses a drop-down shower pan complete with a mixer valve and a stainless steel shower head, a 24-gallon (91-liter) wheel well freshwater tank, and an outdoor shower.

You're probably curious about how much this all costs. The company hasn't shared the exact price of this build. However, based on other conversions it has done, we can estimate this unit is priced somewhere around $170,000 to $200,000 (€156,982 to €184,685).

All in all, Gone Mobile Vans has created a fantastic adventure-ready mobile home. It's got all the essentials, a flexible bed system, and the appropriate utilities for off-grid travel. I know it's offered for quite a hefty price, but this ultra-functional rig requires no further investment for you to start roaming in it, except for the fuel.
