You don't need a new base vehicle to create a fantastic tiny home on wheels. Today, I'm discussing a couple who converted an older Sprinter van into a full-time mobile home.
Meet Jordan and Annalise, the owners and builders of this beautiful 2007 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a 170" wheelbase and a high roof. The couple finished the conversion project in 2019, and have traveled full-time in it for a year.

Sprinter vans are one of the most popular options for camper van conversions. However, not everybody can afford a new one – a 2024 model starts at $52,195 (€47,805), which is more than some adventurers' budgets for their conversions. However, an older model will definitely do the job. Sure, you don't get some useful options, and you have to take a bit of a gamble as you cannot know for sure how the previous owner maintained it, but I'd say it's worth it.

Anyway, let's take a closer look at this rig, starting with its exterior. If you were to pass by this vehicle on the road, you might not think people are living inside. It's finished in all-white paint and doesn't have elements that hint toward its camper DNA. A keen eye might observe the water fill, the shore power connection, or the flares, which are designed to increase the interior space.

At the front, Jordan and Annalise installed a bull bar complete with two lights. Moreover, they fitted a roof rack holding an LED light bar at the front and two 200 W solar panels on the roof.

That's it for the exterior, so let's step inside. Since this is a UK model, you'll have to enter through the door on the left side of the vehicle. Slide it open, and you'll be greeted by a tastefully designed, warm interior. It has white shiplap walls paired with a wooden ceiling and blue/grey cabinetry.

The duo opted for a closed layout, meaning the driver's cabin is separated from the living space by a wall with a narrow door. While this makes the space feel a bit smaller, it also makes it feel more like a home, as you don't always see the driver's cabin, reminding you you're in a van.

As you enter, you'll find a seating area on your left, consisting of a small bench and a swivel table. The space underneath the bench is split into two parts: one serves as a shoe storage spot, while the other is a "laundry basket." Furthermore, you'll find a small rack and a spacious headliner shelf storage space above.

One of the most sought-after amenities in tiny homes on wheels is a bathroom. If you live in a hotter environment, you can make do with an outdoor shower and a portable toilet, thus creating more room inside by not installing a fixed toilet. However, the colder it gets, the more uncomfortable it will be to shower outside.

Jordan and Annalise's layout left room for a decently sized bathroom. It's located dead ahead of the entrance and boasts a shower and a composting toilet. Regarding aesthetics, they chose a wall sticker imitating white marble while the floor is covered in a tile design. What's more, the couple added a rope trim all around the ceiling, which is a nice distinctive touch.

The couple fitted a 70-liter (18-gallon) freshwater tank in the spare wheel holder underneath the vehicle. Moreover, there’s no greywater tank, so the shower drains directly underneath the vehicle.

I did mention the seating area earlier, but there's no way two people could fit there and eat or work on their laptops. So, Jordan and Annalise installed another seating spot deeper into the van. It's got two benches with a swivel table in between. Moreover, the table can be removed to connect the two benches and create a couch.

Opposite it, you'll discover the kitchen, which, as Annalise described, is the main feature of the van, especially since it catches your eye due to its peel-and-stick tiled backsplash. It features a deep sink, a wall-mounted spice rack, a magnetic knife rack, a carbon monoxide alarm, and a two-burner stove. Moreover, the couple installed a 12 V fridge/freezer underneath the bed. For storage, you can use two spacious overhead cabinets, two cupboards, and four drawers.

The remaining space between the kitchen and the bedroom is occupied by a floor-to-ceiling closet. On the opposite side, integrated into the bed frame, is the rig's control panel. It consists of two battery monitors, a Renogy inverter switch, USB plugs, and a cigarette port.

The final part of the living space is the bedroom. Since Jordan and Annalise fitted flares, they had enough space to arrange the bed to sleep from side to side. In fact, this part of the van has a width of 6'2" (188 centimeters). Notable features in the bedroom are two overhead cabinets, a double USB socket, and a tablet attached to a flexible mount.

Like in most camper van conversions, you'll find the utility systems in the garage. In this van, you can access the garage only by opening the rear doors. It offers a bunch of room in the garage to fit bulkier items, such as a spare tire. Oh, and a nice touch is that the couple put velcro straps in the rear doors to hold skis.

The power system is located on the garage's left side. Its highlights are an MPPT charge controller connected to the 400 W solar panels on the roof, a 2,000 W inverter, a bi-directional battery-to-battery charger, and three 100 Ah LiTime lithium batteries, enough to allow the couple to go off the grid.

All in all, Jordan and Annalise have created a practical and aesthetically pleasing camper van. Even though it looks a bit older on the outside since the vehicle is 17 years old, you'll forget about that once you step inside the modern interior. What makes this build even more impressive is that it's the first time the couple has done such a project.
