It was exactly one year ago when Ford announced the arrival of the Megazilla. Now, the engine will go into production and will come out with a price close to that of the Maverick pickup, for instance.
The Maverick starts at $23,400 in the US. For the money, customers get the entry-level XL version, which is powered by the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. That power has around a third of the capacity of the Megazilla engine, which displaces 7.3 liters, just like the Godzilla that it is derived from. A replacement for the 6.2-liter Boss V8 engine, the Godzilla was the only Ford pushrod V8 offered in series production vehicles.

But it comes with some extra oomph, as it is rated at a maximum of 615 horsepower (624 Nm) at 6,760 rpm and 638 pound-feet (864 Nm) of torque at 4,650 rpm. Meanwhile, the Godzilla, which made its debut in the 2020 Super Duty, stops at 430 horsepower (436 PS) and 475 pound-feet (644 Nm).

Back then, Ford announced that it would come up with a modified crate version of the engine. Mike Goodwin from Ford Performance admitted that they had no idea if forced induction was going to be on the menu, but called the engine "a secret project."

In the fall of 2022, Ford Motor Company filed the Megazilla trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office under Nice class 12 for crate engines.

The engine was unveiled at the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Indianapolis, in December 2022. And now, one year later, FoMoCo is finally ready to sell it. There is no supercharger or turbocharger assisting the power plant.

Instead of the forced induction, Ford resorted to CNC-ported aluminum heads, a low-profile intake manifold, a 92-millimeter throttle body, plus an upgraded camshaft with no variable cam timing. The unit has a compression ratio identical to that of the Godzilla: 10.5:1.

But it costs a pretty penny: $22,995. Almost the money you could buy a Ford Maverick with.

The Megazilla is a long block that generates 84 horsepower per liter, using two valves per cylinder and pushrods. It features the same Mahle pistons and Callies H-beam connecting rods as the Godzilla, but now in a forged version.

Despite the massive displacement, the 7.3-liter engine is narrower than the Ford Mustang’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8. It is very unlikely, though, to see it under the hood of a ‘Stang driving through the factory gate.

Ford Performance sells the standard 7.3-liter at $8,500. So you’ve got $14,495 to have your way with the standard unit. Or you could just go for the Godzilla, which costs $9,175 without the front-end accessory drive kit and control pack. There are tuning houses out there that might be able to get way more from it than 615 horsepower.
