Ford is making a comeback to the legendary Rolex 24 at Daytona, throwing two all-new Mustang GT3s into the race. The Mustang GT4 also has a date with Daytona but in a different challenge.
The all-new Mustang GT3 IMSA race car, developed by Ford Performance in collaboration with Multimac Motorsports, is going to race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. There will actually be not one, but two cars, both racing in the GTD Pro Class.

The entries in the GTD and GTD Pro classes translate to Ford's comeback to global sports car racing in the 2024 season. Proton Competition will also field a Mustang GT3 in the GTD class for the 62nd edition of the endurance race.

Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports, Mark Rushbrook, says the team is ready to unleash the GT3 and GT4 and is looking forward to returning to the IMSA competition.

Ford and Mutlimac are racing a two-car, factory-backed GT3 lineup in the GTD Pro, with drivers Chris Mies, Mike Rockenfeller, and Harry Tincknell in the No. 64 Mustang. Meanwhile, Le Mans winners Joey Hand and Dirk Muller team up with Frederic Vervisch in the No. 65 Mustang. The numbers selected by the team are a tribute to Ford Mustang’s 60th anniversary.

The team does not expect the race at Daytona to be a walk in the park. Multimac Special Vehicle Operations Executive Vice President, Larry Holt, says that they spared no effort in creating a car capable of taking on the legendary twice-around-the-clock competition and that they are aware that the first race for a new car is always the hardest.

Dennis Olsen, Corey Lewis, Ryan Hardwick, and Giammarco Levorato will be piloting the No. 55 Mustang GT3 for Proton Competition in the GTD class.

There will also be two customer teams at Daytona. They will be racing the all-new Mustang GT4 in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series and the IMSA VP Racing Sports Car Challenge.

Ford has always felt at home at Daytona, from its first victory in 1966, with Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby driving a Ford Mk II, to the most recent of triumphs: a class victory for the Ford GTLM in 2017 with Kurt Busch behind the steering wheel. Kurt’s car had been damaged. It was held together with tape and was lacking a mirror. He threw caution to the wind and managed to win, finishing 0.228 seconds ahead of Ryan Blaney.

America's biggest sportscar race kicks off on Saturday, January 27, at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Big names such as Marcus Ericsson and 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button will be in the GTP class this year. Meanwhile, another ex-Formula 1 star, Felipe Massa, will race in the LMP2 subsidiary class.
