Not long ago, it was touted as the one full-size light-duty electric pickup truck to rule them all. However, it seems that Ford rushed to the market a bit too soon with the F-150 Lightning.
Sure, it was America's favorite EV pickup truck last year, just like in 2022. But the company wanted to profit as much as it could from the sudden jump in interest in electric vehicles from a few months ago and raised prices too much, too soon. All the other rivals didn't fare any better or stayed cheaper, of course. So, with a market cooldown for EVs (other than Tesla) and the start of deliveries for the Cybertruck, it's a hill climb for the F-150 Lightning in 2024.
Additionally, we just learned that an undisclosed quality issue has triggered a nationwide halt of shipments of the Ford F-150 Lightning – meaning this could be the worst year for the model. Of course, there are always solutions, as even Ford showed. For example, not long ago, its Ford Performance division, alongside RTR Vehicles, created a "groundbreaking electric demonstrator vehicle" called the Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear.
In a few words, this is the EV equivalent of the mighty Raptor. Unfortunately, it's just a prototype. However, that's no impediment for some folks - like the ones dwelling around the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. For example, Jim, the virtual artist known as jlord8 on social media, loves messing around with all things CGI from Ford, as he grew up with them, and even today has stuff like a 1986 Buick Regal T-Type and 2001 Ford F-150 Lightning SVT.
So, it is no wonder that as soon as Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles announced the prototype and showed it jumping around and throwing mud and dirt into the air, he quickly concocted a two-door Bronco-style off-road SUV that would make any fans of the second through fifth generation pretty darn proud. Alas, maybe a small electric SUV with big off-road dreams isn't the one for you because of various reasons – like having a big family.
Well, the pixel master wants to strike the right Ford F-150 Switchgear chords yet again, this time remembering that he "grew up in an Econoline," so again, he imagines "what a modern-day version could look like." A big smile, copious laughter, or a frown look later, what we have before our eyes in the short video embedded below is an E-Series van beyond wild dreams. It's based on the EV truck with a reworked cabin, higher hood line, larger front doors, sliding rear doors, and massive trunk plus third-row space.
On top of that, the CGI expert still kept all the F-150 Lightning Switchgear characteristics, including the decals, wild aero (like the rear wing), and all the off-road goodies. So, could this be the ultimate EV adventure minivan that no one has dared to think about until now?
