Unfortunately, Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles have created this as "a groundbreaking electric demonstrator vehicle" only rather than something you can buy from the brand's online sales portal and get outfitted by Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s aftermarket outlet.
Ford Performance is starting 2024 with a show of force – their 2024 Season Launch Event was live on January 17 to promise that "a new golden age of Ford motorsports is dawning." This year, they will be involved in more of everything – "more events, series, terrains, and places than any other brand." They also want to go beyond the track and right onto off-road trails in EV mode, complete with the new Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear built in collaboration with RTR Vehicles.
Inspired by the F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle from 2016, this EV demonstrator truck is based on the chassis of the F-150 Lightning that's available for sale, and the Blue Oval company claims it is America's best-selling electric truck based on currently reported sales for 2023. However, Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s RTR Vehicles also says that "every inch of the exterior has been customized," with the carbon composite front fenders, bedsides, and rear bumper cover mixing nicely with steel fabricated rock rails and a front skid plate plus 37-inch tires and a special a Ford Performance 2024 livery.
Additionally, the off-road upgrades under the custom exterior carbon fiber bodywork will "take the F-150 Lightning where it's never been." This latest member of the Ford Performance Demonstrator program, which includes the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, the Mustang CobraJet 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator prototypes, gets an entirely different playground: mud, dirt, sand, and trails. Obviously, with Vaughn Gittin Jr. behind the steering wheel and making good use of the huge brake lever, this Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear is a fun off-roader to be around, enjoying both muddy drifts and catching some air between them.
The modifications include Fox 3-inch-diameter internal bypass shock absorbers, a custom independent double-wishbone suspension at the front with a multilink setup at the rear with coilovers, custom control arms, limit straps, and Nitto Ridge Grappler 37-inch tires fitted to 18-inch Forged RTR Tech 6 Beadlock wheels, plus a bespoke chase rack with two spare wheels/tires. Also, it's pretty evident that the truck now has a vastly increased track width, improved ground clearance, and additional suspension travel.
Inside, now there are five Recaro Sportster ORV seats to make it both comfortable and sporty, with everyone safely strapped in thanks to a set of RTR 6-point harnesses by Schroth. Of course, the main attraction is that spectacular billet reverse mount hydraulic e-brake from ASD Motorsports. This new EV demonstrator's first official public appearance will be on January 25 at the King of the Hammers off-road racing event in Johnson Valley, California.
